When a car has been written off and NCB has been lost:

Is it normal for the insurer to retain the whole premium amount and not "refund" any of the remaining months on the policy?

Thanks!

Yes, you won't get any premium back.

Yes, normal. It's in their ts and cs IIRC and is part of their insuracne profile.

And if you pay mothly, they take the rest of the year's premium out of the payout!

Depends on the insurer as to whether you can get a refund/transfer the policy on write off or if they take or keep the remaining years fee and cancel the policy.
It's a really old clause that most decent insurers now won't include.
Admiral group take the money (Admiral, Bell, Elephant etc.), one of the reason why I won't use them and no doubt one of the reasons why they come out cheaper than the rest.
Check the small print before you go with a cheap quote and weigh up the pros and cons. Obviously worst case is if you write a car off early on in an expensive policy.

If you are with Aviva, insurance continues after car is written off. You can add new car in existing policy which will be treated as change of car.
