Went to photograph some planes
Discussion
Got sick (jealous more like) of seeing D4VE 3LL's pictures of RAF/USAF stuff so decided to have a drive up to the Lake District and walk up Dunmail Raise in order to photograph some low flying aircraft. Checked a few of the websites and this seemed like the nearest location for me so after an hour and a bit of driving parked up and chucked the backpack on loaded with camera.
There were a few others there on different outcrops presumably for the same thing (didn't go over to speak to them) so found a good spot with a good view of and approaching aircraft and sat down with camera at the ready.
A bit overcast and hazey but never mind. Lovely views all round so decided seeing as though it was the first proper time out with the 70-200 f2.8 I'd play around with settings, get used to panning with such a weighty lense etc (gently caress and stroke it in a sort of Mr Bigglesworth/Dr Evil moment
)
A shot south down the valley generally towards the Grasmere area. The below shot was at ISO400 and to me seems very grainy. I don't very often use anything over 200 but has anyone else with a 7D noticed the amount of noise evident in the shot at ISO400 and above??

Not much happening after an hour of nothingness and it was nice and quiet so had a spot of lunch then saw a funny looking thing on a truck below so thought I'd take a pic. Think it has something to do with sanitation/water but looked odd going past.

Another half hour and what's that? The noise of a helicpoter, yes!! Oh wait, no. Where is it?

Bloody thing was about a mile and a half away and appeared to be rigged up to carry stuff so presumably civilian
. Shot at 200mm, not cropped in the above image.
Another half hour passes so took the best pic of the day (my car sat in the layby!).

Another hour of bugger all (good job I took my MP4 player along for some tunes to listen to) and realised I'd never seen Thirlmere so low in the 14 or so years I've been regularly visiting the Lakes. Not long before a good hosepipe ban then.

Another half hour passed with nothing so thought I'd give up and wandered back down to the car and come home
.
So all in all, nearly 3 hours of driving, £30 worth of fuel, 4 1/2 hours sat on the side of a mountain, and no pics of anything remotely interesting! Photography, don't you just love it!
On a brighter note I'm considering going to Bwlch tomorrow to see if I can get some plane piccies
.

With regards the noise issue, there have been mentions of it on other forums. Have you updated to the latest firmware? One of the guys reckons his improved after installing it. (covert update? - Who knows!) Whether it actually did improve, or whether it was him I don't know..
I`m reasonably happy, I've always got noiseware as a backup! There was a mention of the method of PP too. Those that used Canons DPP software seemed to feel it dealt with the noise better.

I notice noise at ISO 100 even, but it realy depends on exposure, ISo 400 and 800 look worse relative to other cameras, above 800 it gets realy good, I think its down to the 4 channel read and unbalanced greenc hannels, also a lot down to the raw convertor, what are you using?I've posted very clean ISO 6400 shots on here from mine (carefully processed tho) yet 400/800 doesnt seem as right!?!

Always use the Canon DPP software and transfer to photoshop. Have tried to find something that allows my Photoshop (CS3) to open the RAWs from the 7D but have given up and none of the updates from Adobe seem to work so use Canons software.14-7 said:

at the time some googleing revealed some people having a few slight noise issues, and some people having no problem at all. all a bit odd.
I think its just sensative to exposure, on any real scientific measure it comes out very well compared to any other APS-C sensor.
Very easy to get into the 100% view and crops, and ignore the overall image which is usualy superb.
I've profiled NN and use ACR (latest0 and it seems to do a good job.

Going back to the original title of this thread.
It sounded like a bit of a familiar story when I read it.
I was on holiday in the Lakes back in April. When we booked this break I thought brilliant, I'll see a few jets buzzing around and maybe if I can loose the girlfriend for a day (a couple of hours at best) I may get chance to get some decent pics.
On the monday morning I heard a bit of jet noise, but nothing visible. Then while driving down in the Kendal area got buzzed by a pair of hawks - nice!
In the afternoon we took a boat trip on Conniston water. Saw these two GR4's come round the corner at the south end of the valley. [

Not the best pic. Had the 24mm-135mm lens on at the time. 100mm-400mm in the car- typical.
I then was on a bit of a quest to go to the tourist spots close to where I know jets come close to.
Tues was a really cloudy day so wasn't expecting to see a thing.
x1 C130 and x2 Tucano....no pics.
On the weds, this was my chance to loose 'her in doors' in the afternoon. I checked one of the lowflying websites to see where would be best to go at that time of day. I decided on the M6 pass.
After a couple of hours of seening chuff all I was about to call it a day when this came down the pass.

not long after that I had a call from a mate who knew i was going up. All flying suspended due to the volcanic ash cloud!!
Planning to go to wales for my next trip.

Hi, are you using a UV (skylight) filter? Helps a lot to reduce haze, and can be left on to protect your lens.
It's difficult to get shots of aircraft that haven't been done to death before, Farnborough is on this year - you can get some interesting stuff without them being airborne which can be a little different. Here's one I took 08.
