Santander's pretty solid with good returns and a price which, though below its peak (name one that's not), is holding well and likely to rise again, I'd say.

I subscribe to Money Week magazine which is full of good advice and gives a good overview on the economy and investments. They predicted the recession 100% all the way so far and I have done well from some of the tips in it.

Once thing I would say is make sure your portfolio is balanced so for example, you might like to hold some oil stocks but it would be a good idea to hold some green energy stocks to balance it out.

I would also read up on "Portfolio Theory" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_portfolio_theo...

Cheers

In my view (please only use my posts as something to research fully first, I would hate to be responsible for another sub-prime crisis!).

I would spend some time researching every share thoroughly first, understand the market. I would look at penny shares to start with, slightly riskier but the upside is greater and you can generally always study the sector each business is in a bit easier.

As for gold, at the moment I still think it is worth a punt, perhaps look at gold sovereign coins as I believe they are exempt from tax if you make a profit! and are not too expensive to buy in to.

Yeh i was looking at the gold coins but i don't want to put my money into something i don't know anything about, i shall read up on it a bit more untill i make a decision. I have started to do a spread sheet so i can work out how the shares are doing over say a month keeping a track off them. But ive been reading now is the time to buy the shares with the economy being so sh*t at the moment lol. Thanks for your advice jackelman, Anybody else got any other companys that they can recomend for me to have a look at. thanks smile

You could always set-up a test portfolio in Google finance to test your investments out before you buy.
