Hello All,

Thinking of chopping my Mini JCW in for a 1 series. Just wondering when the facelift was and what to look for. Probably a 120D.

Love the look of this, but a bit rich and quite like black - I'm a sucker for nice wheels!

Thanks

Thanks. Am I right in thinking that the 123D is far better and more fuel efficient than the 120D?

Is that because it's newer technology?

I think the 123D is fairly new.

I don't know about it being more fuel efficient, but if you can afford to buy a 123d then yes, it's the better engine and is possibly the most un-diesel like 4 cyl diesel by all accounts.

Hi there,

I'm pretty sure it was the later part of 2007 that the face lift and efficient dynamics came in.

Just so you are aware the 116d is the most economical and the 123d being the least.

The 123d is the most powerful were as the 116d is the least, the 118d and 120d sit in between. All the engines are a 2.0l diesel with varying stages on tweeks e.g. 123d is a twin turbo.

Is the 123d better? depends what you want it for, yes it's quicker certainly and the gears are a closer ratio than the 116 & 118d's but other than that the cars should be pretty much the same.

Thanks Rich,

Odd the BMW site states that the 123d is more fuel efficient than the 116d

46mpg vs 55mpg combined.

Think you've miss read that a little:

116d - 64.2mpg combined with 116bhp
118d - 62.8mpg combined with 143bhp
120d - 60.1mpg combined with 177bhp
123d - 55.4mpg combined with 204bhp

I'd expect you to be at least 5 - 10mpg under the figures depending how you drive.

An alternative would be to get a 118 or a 120 and a remap, the 118 can be safely mapped to 175ish while the 120d can be taken to around 200bhp, something thats worth considering.

Sorry Rich, I do apologise. God knows what I was looking at.

120 with a remap sounds interesting. 123d are very few on the ground.

I found from another thread on here that the 123d has lower gear ratios than the 120d to help with performance etc.. this makes for higher revs when sitting at 70/80mph, and apparantly hurts economy.

the fl started early in 2007,march-april then a few tweeks in september, the best i series for mpg is the 118d,i think its one of the cleanest cars for size at the moment, the first fl 118d road tax is £90 the tweeks in september seen it drop to £35.

I was selling my Z4M .... and tried a 123d .... superb car. No lag and good economy.

I then tried and bought a 320d auto. More lag (but not in any way bad), less free revving but still quick .... and economical.

As and when I feel the need I may remap - but not yet.

Yes, the 123d is noticeably quicker than the lower powered car .... but not drastically .... more instant linear acceleration than any lag.

FWIW I didn't notice any difference at 70 mph, etc due to the gearing of the 123d compared to my 320d. They are both excellent, quiet and economical + very well made smile

I think ED came in on week 26? 2007. This seems to ring a bell when I was looking for the wifes 120d.
I've had it remapped and it's sitting around 210hp now with no noticable difference in economy.

That's what I want to here! That'd be the same as my Mini. Who did you use for the mapping?

There's a pretty good choice for remapping, there's a thread on this 'BMW Diesel Tuning' on page 1 of BMW General at the moment, and have been quite a few in the past.

I personnally used e-maps for the 118d.

My brother got his 120d remapped by Superchips. It was incredibly rapid for a 2-litre and still returned good economy. thumbup

That is not going to help me ... I am on the point of getting them to remap my 320d .... they did my Edition 30 Golf GTi so well I think it would be rude not to try it on the BMW smile
