So has anyone ever tried hitchhiking? I need to get somewhere on wednesday and my car is playing up something awful at the moment and trains aren't exactly ideal.

Its about a 50 mile trip, about 20 miles A-roads, the rest M1.

So anyone ever had any success? What's the etiquette?

Or Machete. Swiss army knives are fine though.

I used to hitch a lot. It would be my preferable way of traveling around as a student, for one because I was skint but for 2 it makes the day an adventure. I have never had a bad experience hitching and met a lot of great and interesting people.

Advice?: Look clean and presentable. Don't look like a miserable tt. Put 'please' underneath where you wish to go, and break the journey up - for example if you're going from London to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, don't put this on your bit of cardboard. Put 'Birmingham' and make another one up as you go along.

Don't just stand there with your thumb out. People want to know that you're actually going to a destination they can help with and aren't going to stop to find a compromise. And that you're not just trying to get into someone's car for any other reason.

M-Way (or any I suppose) sliproads and services are good places, make sure you get dropped off for the next leg of your journey at such a location. No good getting dropped off somwewhere obscure.

Make an effort to chat to the person that's picked you up but judge the level of interaction they want. I've had folk not want to communicate at all, which is a bit weird if you ask me. The point is they most likely will want to chat but don't want their journey ruined by being spoken at all the way.

Enjoy.

I've hitched a couple of times, out of necessity. Basically, you find somewhere where folks aren't going too fast and stick your thumb out. People are kinder than you think, but it will often be a bored trucker who will want a bit of conversation in return.

You'll want to plan your route a bit; no point flagging down thirty people who aren't going your way.

Thats some good info thanks.

How long does range for a pick up time? IE how much time would you leave for a 50 mile trip which takes approx 1 hour?

May as well try... Anyone going near milton keynes on wednesday from the warwichshire area?

Its a reasonably obvious route, Ie there are only about 3 towns on the route, so wherever I'm picked up its likely id get a good chunk of travel off them.

Impossible to tell, but I've rarely waited more than 20 minutes. More often folk are beeping while you're putting your bag down, and you can be talking less than 5 minutes. Of course, I'm a beautiful harmless looking boy. Allow a few hours either side depending on shortness of hair and chav appearance. It's not something you want to do against the clock, just allow plenty of time, relax, and enjoy.

I've been picked up by young and old girls/boys/men/women of all description.

Keep the vuvuzela hidden in your bag until you're safely in the car.

Excellent, well I need to be there by about 10, it would take an hour to drive, so I'm thinking of leaving at 7 if I do it to be on the safe side.

It's something I've always wanted to try so may as well give it a whirl!

I used to hitch quite a bit as a student it was a fun and cheap way to get around. I used to have no problem getting lifts but would allow about 3 times as long as a more direct means of travel and you won't go far wrong IMO.

if it's urgent and you need to be there specifically for 10-

if you drop me a pm, I'm not up to much in the morning, so get close, I will come and take you to your destination in MK

(with the added bonus that I promise not to murder you)

I don't know whether to advise this or not, but it has worked for me,

Pick somewhere where folk can see you and are able to stop without upsetting anyone, but is in a weird location. Somewhere you'd think no-one would hitch from.

It's amazing the amount of folk that will pick you up because 'no-one's going to pick you up from there' wink
