If you hire a car in Germany and drive it to Austria what is the deal with insurance. I assume that you are covered no matter where you go as long as you are in the EU?

It depends on the car, sometimes they used to be bit dubious about you taking expensive cars into the former eastern bloc but this was a couple of years ago so might have changed. Austria should be fine.

(Derestricted toll roads may be another matter but we've got enough threads on that issue already.)

Check with the company. I often hire in Spain and it does mention Portugal but I've never taken notice as I don't intend crossing the border.
