Only bought from abroad but I imagine the process is similar. The seller supplies their bank account details, the buyer transfers the money and the car is placed in the hands of the shipping agent.

Generally the seller is a company and don't have any qualms about handing out their bank details, but I suppose as you're a private individual, you might want to set up an account specifically for the purposes of the sale.

I'm sure there will be lots of opinion on this but unless he is paying you over the odds (which might spell trouble in itself) or you can't shift it anywhere else would it not be a lot easier to just sell it to someone else? I'm not sure of the technicalities of shipping a car for private sale but what happens if the ship sinks for instance?

Sounds like a bit of a fanny-on even if it is legit I reckon.

Generally it is the responsibility of the buyer to arrange marine insurance. Shipping companies will usually quote a variety of rates, FOB, CIF, etc and it's up to the buyer which they opt for.

I'm and Aussie who returned from the UK after a few years and took my car with me. Purchasing a car (or parts) in the UK is very favorable from our point of view at the moment given the currently weak (historically) GB/AU exchange rate. Make sure you fix the price it in sterling to ensure you get what you want.

The main (only) concern here for you both is that payment is made and that the goods are as described. If I were you (seller) I'd take a non refundable deposit. Have the purchasers shipper collect/recieve the car. Instruct the shipper NOT to ship until you okay (you still own it technically - you have the V5). On reciept of the balance funds - hand over the V5 to the shipper and release the car for shipping. Too easy. Payment by direct deposit to your account/paypal/food stamps whatever.. it's a small world and money is wired everywhich way safely each and everyday. I'm not sure why the paranoia about handing out account numbers and sort codes - nobody from our end can really do anything with them except give you money. I do understand as I was a victim of identity fraud (VISA) in the UK (by somebody in the uk) - was easily sorted by the bank though.

The ORIGINAL V5 and proof of sale will be required by the buyer to complete the import process, pay duty, inspect (MOT), register(tax), pay state sales tax, etc once in Aust.

Insurance/shipping/aust. taxes and customs charges are the buyers concern. The buyer will also require the VIN at least 6 weeks prior to obtain Australian permission to import the car. If they don't get that (linked to he VIN), it will be turned around on the docks or crushed, No questions.

I take it the car in question was manufactured prior to December 1989 - or really special. Otherwise refer crushing requirements above.

There is no correlation between the price of 2nd hand cars in the UK and Aust. It may be very worthwhile to import something that is rare in Aust. or simply never available. Don't forget the reverse probably holds true ie. we lose early VW's (splits) and V8 Holden/Fords all the time.
