Valve Order

I measured my clearances and shims last night, wrote them on a piece of paper numbering them 1-8 (1 being the valve at the front of the engine). What I failed to do was note down which valves was inlet and which were exhaust. Anyway know off the top of their head?

If you know which order you took the valves out then by looking at your head you will see that the inlet and the exhaust are offset and inline with the valve so you can work it out for that:

So from the pictures below we can see that:



Number 1 is an inlet



That the exhaust is the bigger valves



And before cleaning the exhaust tends to be a sooty black and the inlet and brown colour.

So from the above it goes:

Inlet 1,3,6,8
Exhaust 2,4,5,7

Excellent, thanks for that. Was pretty sure they alternated, just wasn't sure whether they started on inlet, or exhaust, and the engine is currently 20 miles from my office.

Make sure you notice they change order half way down (the two centre ones are exhaust).

Haha, just noticed that! Halfway through working out which shims I can grind down and where I need to get new ones made.

hope you haven't started grinding, yet the info posted is the wrong way round from front of the head (timing chain end)the order is ex/in/ex/in/in/ex/in/ex the larger valves are the inlet valves hth

Was going to say Inlet is 99% of the time the bigger valve unless you have some oddball 3 or 5 valve engine.
