And if there an oil spill, the Cleethorpes residents are going to have to shake down XYZ Oil company down for £10 or even £15 for a spoiled beach.

Not good at all im afraid, I know quite a few lads who work on there, 2 minor injuries but one poor lad not accounted for, presumed dead frown

more info at www.thisisgrimsby.co.uk,

apparently caused by a valve that failed as they brought one of the heaters back online around the distillation columns.

thoughts to his family.

Same as me Pete, I'm in oil and gas and it does open your eyes. Our safety culture compared to the rest of the world is very high, but a lot of equipment on UK sites is getting old. Unless the investment comes we may see more frequent things like this. Thoughts go to the family frown

It's sad news reading that they've confirmed that one 24-year old is dead. As another refinery worer (at another UK site) its a sobering reminder of the hazards involved. I hope that it does turn out to have been an unfortunate cause rather than anyone's negligence.

Surprised to read of an explosion AFTER the fire first started, I wouldn't have expected that. I can't tell from the photos whether it was close to the heaters so not really sure if it was a pass failure or similar, or if it was bottoms pumps/ hot product from the main column.

If anyone does have any details on apparent cause please PM me, it would be helpful to use as a 'safety moment' onsite.

On the Hull Daily Mails website they reported that 'smoke could be seen as far away as Hull' - no st Sherlock! it's only three miles away as the crow flies!

Terribly sad about the fatality though - wasn't there an explosion at that refinery a few years ago?

APPARANTLY it was a bypass valve and then consequent pressure build up, the unfortunate guy who was killed was plumbing new pipes in about 5 feet away from the initial pressure release/fireball.

RIP fella.

Conoco phillip's humber refinery nearby had a big incident in 2001, the HSE report can be found online. That was down to corrosion and failure of a mixed LPG line as some mods hd been done to the line without any management of change risk assessment.

I'm sure the future HSE report will give the full explanation, but I know some companies have added restrictions on "non-essential" workers being near equipment being started up since the Texas City incident.

Sobering that he was only 24, I'm not quite at that age yet and the thought of life being ended that easily certainly reminds me of my mortality.
