Actually shorts go up to £220 for Assos FI.13_S5. 
While you don't need to spend quite that much there is a massive difference in long distance comfort between cheap shorts and expensive ones. For years I made do with a few pairs of £35 shorts because I didn't know any better but having recently invested in a pair of dhb Knowle and a pair of Assos FI.Mille there's no way I'd go back to the cheaper stuff.
Yes it's a bit of an investment to spend that much on nothing more than a flimsy bit of lycra and a pad but you'll get a lot more enjoyment out of cycling in the long run, without the pain!
If your budget doesn't quite stretch to £220 yet (I've yet to meet anyone who's does!), I'd take a look at the various dhb offerings from Wiggle and buy the best you can afford.

Sort of, some of it's gimmicky though. Like Royal shorts have a pad for wiping your gloves (?!), or my Fox ones have a clipon cloth to wipe your goggles on.Are you wanting them for MTB or Road ?

so £220 would probably be wasted on me.. looking for a cheapish compramise around the 30 mark really..
What sort of riding are you doing? It seems for road stuff, bibs are better and us MTB ers generally prefer shorts. Endura do a fantastic range of shorts. I have a couple of pairs and they have lasted really well. One pair is on it's 4th season, old beaten, a little ripped but still comfy!. The great thing is the Lycra inner short that holds the padding separates from the outer baggy short so you get a rather nice pair of shorts to wear normally and a damn good pair of cycle shorts. They are not expensive and good quality. Untill I can justify the assos shorts they are great.

yeah my plan exactly - a lycra padded pair with a normal pair over the top. i do a mix of on and off road stuff so looking for some sort of compromise..Endura is a good call - pretty good quality shorts for around £50 and the liners can be replaced (for washing or when they wear out).
I'm on my 3rd pair of Humvees; the original pair got so much use over the years that they eventually wore away to nothing but the other 2 pairs are still going strong.

Endura Hummvee's all the way for me too. I've had the same two pairs of outers for around 5 years (I think) but replaced the inners last year. Leisure Lakes (online) are doing Hummvees for just over £40 at the moment including the liner. Just bought muself a third pair due to the amount of biking I'm doing at the moment
