I need help choosing??? I've recently moved jobs so now work 3 country miles from work and 30 seconds from my wife. This means we no longer need 2 cars and with a second baby due shortly a larger car required.

So 20k budget as need to hold onto savings as will probably need to buy a second car in about a year.

Fuel consumption not really an issue but need to keep servicing cost down. Was thinking 535d touring...

Would it be any quicker than a 535? And would you get more of a car to start with spec wise as depreciation will be worse....

Probably not hugely quicker but it'll be more reliable as it doesnt have the complexity of a commonrail injection system and two turbos.

Also, everyone wants a 535d and nobody wants a 545i so some good deals to be had!

Theboss- that alpina is lovely and as said very tempting!

R360- the 330d is a 2006 black e90 msport manual with 56k. I haven't got it up for sale yet don't start new job for another 2 weeks yet...

I need to find a 545, that v8 does tempt me...

I do worry that in a couple of years there won't be many people wanting to spend 10k on a big v8 with high running costs!! Is a 550 going to be any different reliability with a 535d or should I get s newer lower milage 530d and remap?????? Decision decisions

Anything could happen with either, they're both very conplex cars.. I'd say the high pressure fuel pumps, common rail tech, turbos etc on diesels are more likely to go wrong than a big NA V8.

The big V8 a few years down the road will have less of a market and the price will reflect that, but it does now.biggrin

Yeah I like the B10 V8 a lot... very rare and excellent blend of refinement, composure, practicality, with blistering pace. Kept in good order and without hammering the mileage I'm sure it would hold some value.

The 1st 550i above is epic in terms of spec... heads-up display, night vision, panoramic roof, etc... basically the top of the range non-M5 E61 with every damned option ticked... and relatively low miles... for £20k.

Both very appealing propositions in their own right regardless of cost difference.

Will do.

535d has to be way forward. My mate picked up his bmw last night and asked the guys there 535 or 550 and they all said 535, and saud reliability is equal. this one very nice shame I can't by today.

I would replace it with my car which will soon be for salesmile 550 Msport, 66k miles, carbon black full BMWSH and no crappy 2005 satnav which is another thing to go wrongsmile 55 plate registered on 4th Jan so lower road tax as well.

The 535D I am sure is a nice car but the 550 blows its doors off in performance and refinement. No turbos to go wrong etc.

My car would be less than 20k toosmile

Pm me if interestedsmile

Good luck!

I doubt the guys there had even seen a 550i let alone driven one. There are actually pretty strict rules about what level of sales staff can take home what sort of cars and a 550i would only be going home with the dealer principle or sales manager.

The 550i is in another league to the 535d.

What spec is it? And what are the costs compared to a 535? Have you any pics?

Right, i'm putting the 330d up for sale tomorrow (R360 have a look) and then i'm going for a 530d or 535d. Safe choice and resale shouldn't be a problem. If a 545 or 550 comes up once looking i'll definately consider it espescially due to the high spec they normally come with but tourings rare so not holding out much luck.

Anyone thinking of selling?

The first one has been 'sold' and now appears at Sytner Leicester for sale at £24850!

I have been looking at 550i's to replace a Z4M
