What about a VW fox?

New VW fox for £5995 is what the otherhalf is looking at today? The price looks good to me but is the car any good?
No. Nasty hard plastics, slow as anything, and thirsty with high emissions for its class. The 1.2 is a £110 tax disc for its 55bhp and has combined mpg of 46.3. It's just old tech engine wise and it shows.

If you want cheap(ish) what about an Aygo (and C1 and 107)? They're £35 tax (aren't they?) and the 3 pot sounds... interesting...
Mafioso speaks sense! Better engine, more power, better economy and an interesting sound. Not sure if some of them qualify for zero road tax. Funky inside too and well made. All mechanically identical, just get the cheapest (probably Citroen) or the one which looks the best to you. Avoid the Peugeot, it's just had an awful facelift whereby they've fitted a brace on it's mouth.mrmarcus said:

Mum has a Polo 1.2 in 65bhp guise and I have driven plenty as courtesy cars in the past, in my opinion its plenty powerful for around town and comfortable without being loud on the motorway @ 70, I see no downsides my self.Couple of retailers have 1.4's with delivery mileage for same price, seems like a bargain and doesn't have a French badge

EDIT:
Couple of other things to consider, the 1.2 is chain driven with no maintenance plan for the life of the engine, so you wont have any expensive cam belt bills every four years or 60k miles.
The 1.4 is belt driven and will require a cam belt change every four years or 60k (unless this has changed with newer engines)
