ST200 Springs?

Front spring broke on my Mondeo ST200 the other day. Obviously plan to replace both fronts however they are £112 each.
Most pattern spring manufacturers list the ST200 and ST24 as having the same spring however I am sure that is not the case. I'm pretty sure that those the '200 are stiffer than the '24 and slightly shorter to give it a lower stance.
One supplier made some calls before ringing me back and said the Mk2 Mondeo diesels used the same spring, the extra stiffness to compensate for the heavier engine. While I accept this is plausible I'm not entirely convinced as this doesn't seem to tie in with the shorter spring length. Does anyone have any idea whether or not this might be the case?
Anyone replaced theirs with anything other than the OEM springs from a dealer? I'm not keen on the idea of a set of aftermarket lowering springs as I'm happy with the car as standard.

I did consider that, its an early one on a 'T' plate and around 11 years old/90,000 miles so not done bad. Unfortunately this is the latest in a recent string of lifes expensive challenges so thought I'd check out the pattern options. As I'm not convinced about the fitments offered by pattern spring manufacturers I'm guessing you blokes are probably right.
Is it a particularly difficult job to do on the drive or is it best left to someone else? If so how much would I be looking to get them done?

I paid someone £90 to change all 4 springs on mine, for the hassle factor i would probably pay someone (i don't have spring compressor etc). I know how you feel, when i car gets old you feel reluctant to throw money at it, the way i look at it though is i have owned the car from new so better the devil you know!! I did make the mistake of fitting pattern rear calipers and handbrake cables to my old car last year though, this winter the handbrake froze on!! Never happened with OE parts.....

Probably because the aftermarket cables don't usually have a protective metal sleeve around the outer casing, which dries the cable out through heat of the exhaust. Don't be religous to genuine though...I'm a partsman at a Ford dealer and half the time the extra cost (usually double) is not worth it for things like brakes, air/pollen filters etc.Be very careful with changing Mondeo springs they need a lot of compression to fit them so need a very good quality compressor to do so, even then i had a compressor fail while doing a set at work, was lucky there wasnt a very nasty accident 
Also be worth being careful removing the pinch bolt in the hub as they corrode quite badly & are a pita when they snap, but a new one to replace it.
