Evening all

Live in France but currently work in the UK. Want to buy a 993 C2 or TT LHD to take home with me. Due to lack of time to see lots of cars and sort out the chaff myself, I'm now considering giving one of the reputable agents a spec and budget to do the leg work for me.

Have any of you gone this route in buying your toys? +ve or -ve experience?

Opinions appreciated.

I bought my LHD 993 from an agent down by the south coast who deals mainly with LHD 911 from Germany, had it for 4 yrs and loving every minute of it. No problem with insurance, minor inconveniences when driving in UK, great for going to Europe. The car was already imported to UK 2yrs before I bought it, so no paper work needed. Saved @£6~7k compared to a RHD at the time. The car is now over 10yrs old, just had its 120000km service, still going strong.

Go to www.carclassic.com I think they are in Geneva and have cars avail from France & Switzerland. Their stock looks fantastic with one particular 993TT at around £38500 it is cheaper than either RSJ or Formulae Fuchs by about £5,000

Oh and the fact that they are already over "La Manche" and registered etc

Buy it from mainland Europe, check out that mobile.de site for example. That way you don't pay for the UK dealer's costs in the price of the car (especially if he's had to import it and get it thru SVA over here).

In Germany the TUV is stricter on declaring major damage too. Plus the speedo will still be in kph and I guess the job of registering the car in the country you're living will be that much easier.

Dom, hasn't Joel sold that TT?

Quick question. When buying a car from Germany, if it has already had sales tax paid, can you deduct the 16% MvSt from the sticker price? My belief was that as long as the car was a certain age and had done a certain number of clicks and the sales tax had been paid in the country of origin then UK sales tax (VAT) was not applicable when the car entered the UK. Not sure about duty though.
Thanks in advance.

If it's a company car that didn't have Mvst paid on it originally, you should be able to claim the Mvst amount off the sticker price, and also avoid duty/VAT in the UK if it is a certain age etc., too. When I imported a Lotus Omega LHD this was the scenario.

However, (AFAIK) non-company cars will have had the MvSt paid on them at time of purchase, and so the price will be all inclusive and not specifically mention MvSt.

Thanks for the answers, even if I didn't really get a direct reply.

The reason that I'm buying in the UK to take back to France is partly for tax reasons, partly coz lhd TTs are cheapish here compared to the continent, though I'll grant you there's less choice.

Had a look at a lhd TT last week, but was depressed by lack of history and the fact they didn't want me to test drive it - must look too much like a test pilot I guess! How can anyone own such a wonderful and pricey car, and not bother to collect the invoices from the services? Quite beyond me...

Anyway, will just keep looking...

I thought I did give an answer. Visit carclassics site. They have 2 x 993Tt in now. One at c£38500 and one dearer but fully factory refurbed.
However I was at that time unaware that you had tax issue to solve, so although answer given it was less than useable
