Any owners or experiences of these?

What is the realistic fuel consumption like on the 745i as opposed to the 730d?

Is the 730d worth the extra money?

I've read around 25 mpg for the 745i and 39 mpg for the 730d, is this accurate in the real world?

That's probably about right for the 745 when crusing on the motorway - the 39mpg for a 730d is maybe a tad high? (In the same situation)

All depends on the mileage you will be doing and the price difference between the 2 cars.

I've had a chip fitted to my 730d by tune it in Chorley. With the cruise control set on 80 MPH it shows 42 MPG, and at 70 MPH 50+ MPG. Worth fitting.

Mileage varies wildly. 2 years ago I did 13000 and last year did 6000. I'm expecting to change my job later this year which might mean relocation, so its hard to say whether I can use public transport as much as I do now.

Price difference for similar age/mileage is around £3000 more for the 730d.

I've ran my 745i now for almost 3 years, about town I get about 19mpg and on a long run anything between 27-30mpg. Not bad for a big V8.

Thats pretty impressive. Certainly higher than I thought for motorway cruising. What sort of speed is that? 70/80mph?

Around the 70/80 mark as the engine is under no stress in 6th, sitting at around the 1500-2000 rpm mark. How many miles per year would you be driving it?

I would say the 730d is not worth £3000 more than a 745i for a few reasons.

1. The 730d roughly does 12mpg more than a 745i, but i reckon you will need to do between 45000-50000miles just to break even.

2. 730d suffers the dreaded swirl flap issues plus others such as turbo and injectors.

3. In most cases the 745i would be better equipped.

4. Lastly, you will be getting a better driving experiance with the 745i with its V8

We have a 745 (2002) and bought it with 50,000 miles - its now done around 130k. One of the many features of the I-drive is the ability to record the fuel consumption in various ways. So our shows that over the last 28,000 miles, it has averaged 24.9mpg. On the motorway, even at 70-90mph, it will return 30mpg. This is where the car is at its happiest, with engine hardly having to work very hard at all. Around town, it plummets though.
We had ours converted to run on LPG so its even cheaper to run ( we're currently paying around 56p per litre).
To be honest though, fuel consumption isn't the only issue as when these things go wrong, its pretty well alway expensive and they are not particularly DIY friendly.

Sorry I missed that earlier. On that basis I would go for the 745i. The V8 is a great match with the car.

How much was the LPG kit?

Thanks for the input people. The 745i is my favourite of the two and I was hoping to continue my run of never having owned a diesel car.

A nearby neighbour has a 730d (his second) and after a brief chat has told me I can have a good look around before I decide. Now I need to find a local 745i for sale to test drive and hopefully make a decision.

I agree with the comment that the 745i's generally seem to be better equipped.

I have a 730d. Expect not much less than 30mpg around town with it creeping up towards 35mpg on longer runs. The best I've ever had was back up north from London through miles and miles of 50mph roadworks where I got 43mpg. Not bad for a barge!

It's an effortless drive on long journeys but being a RWD Beemer it can still make you smile on the twisties. Post-05 cars look better and have vastly improved idrive and other spec improvements. Covered 45k in mine over 30 months and despite a few early niggles (thankfully covered under warranty) it feels tight as a
drum.

Indie that mine goes to now says he's never seen swirl flaps go on a 7. I hope he's right!
