want to get a Cannon Ixus 400 and Pixmania look to b e just about the cheapest place, but then they go and confuse me with their 'Value Packs'... quite a few of them, which if any is worth while?

"cue Chim-Girl..." Not me you loony, you need someone like Simpo.....

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination BUT.... Whatever you decide, you'll need a CF card The Pixmania camera price looks good but you can get the CF cards cheaper elsewhere, they're adding £23 for 128mb card. 7day have 128mb at £17.99.

Oh and CF cards come in different speeds and, yes, you can tell the difference. I bought a 256mb soooper-doooper speed card for ~£40 but had to wait for it to come from the US.

y'see I wasn't any use to you, you'll have to wait for one of the proper photographers to come along and help.

Oh yeah. Er - blimey, what a lot to choose from. Back to first principles I think.

1) Case: good idea, you don't want it getting scratched. You can either have a diddy case or a bigger one that will hold...

2) Spare battery. *Essential*. Always keep it charged. In an emergency you can always find a few pix to delete, but when your battery goes, that's curtains.

3) Memory. I got a 64Mb xD card to go with my 3.2Mp Mju, and as I shoot one res down, I can get about 80 pix on it (approx 700Kb each). That's fine for me as I can always get back to my PC to dump them, but it won'r suit everyone. If you're planning to go on a world tour and shoot at hairy bastard resolution, you'll need much more - or a Phototainer or laptop.

I think you have to try to envisage your requirements, and choose accordingly. If in doubt, go for the next one up.

I can't see if the case is nice one - as Olympus don't seem to do a case for my model I got a LowePro 8S.

I'm not in a position to say which camera is best, but I know the Canon Ixus is highly regarded. You could always poke about on www.dpreview.com or www.stevesdigicams.com just to make sure though.

ATEOTD it's your choice Sir!

Few points:

1) Pixmania are based on the continent and more often than not sell continental gear.

Double check with them as the Ixus 400 comes with a charger that has plug pins built onto it (or at least the one I bought in the US did). This will mean an adapter plug to enable you to use it.

I have seen them often criticised for not providing English manuals with their gear too, and if you're new to digi-cams this will be a bind.

You can often get similar prices from UK based places. Last time I looked, Comet or Dixons online were nearly as good as Pixmania, but without the above hassles. Further, it might be easier to get redress if you have hassles with the camera and have purchased form a UK based source selling UK spec gear...

Of course, if you know anyone going to the States you can pick one of these up for 180GBP or less.

2) Be aware that Canon have released an Ixus 500. Same camera but with 1Mp more.

This isn't critical as the 400 is a great camera, but 400 prices will crumble as the 500 hits the streets. Nothing pisses you off more than paying 250 quid for something that a week or 3 later costs less than 200!

3) Consider a 256Mb card your minimum. 4Mp images chew card space. CF cards aren't that pricey, so my advice would be to buy a 256Mb card. Bundle prices, as noted, aren't always the cheapest for these. Check out www.valuemedia.co.uk.

When buying CF cards, I'd stick with Sandisk or Lexar. I've never had hassles with these cards, but have had "cheapies" fail on me. I have a Sandisk card that I've been using heavily for 4yrs and it's never caused hassles.

4) A second battery is a very good idea if you use your camera out and about. They last well, but you can't just pop into a shop and buy replacements. They also drain quickly in very cold weather!

5) A case is a good idea. Canon excluded one to keep costs down, which was a bit tight. The Canon case is nice in use.

this looks like what i need to get, unless you peeps know different, looks a good price @ £29, worth getting the card reader at an extra £5.75?

Sorry for all these dumb questions

Looks like a good price on the memory card so go for it.

Reader isn't really needed as the camera acts as one, so save your cash.

Not sure what the differences are between the Ixus 400 and 430, but you won't be disappointed.
