it's very sad, but I really miss the sopranos & the wire!! is there anything to compare?

I'll second true blood. And Rescue me was very good to, although I'm still working my way through the first series. Dennis Leary (or O'Leary, what ever it is) is an excellent lead character.

Entourage. I think its fantastic. Lots of humour, fast cars, hot girls.... And Ari rocks!

If you want more cop TV try 'The Shield'.

But the best TV drama i've watched in a long while is: Breaking Bad

While I love True Blood and Spartacus they aren't the same sort of shows as The Wire or The Sopranos, the former are more switch your brain off and be titillated than complex stories spread over many seasons. If I remember correctly the guy who did True Blood also did Six Feet Under, which is similar in style to the Sopranos although it doesn't feature any gangsters. Six Feet Under reminds me of Mad Men, another good one.

Rome would be another one if you haven't seen it already, top class production values and acting. Dexter is a good shout, its another one that isn't as deeply layered as your benchmarks and it does veer from excellence to dross in a few places but it is well worth watching. I've just finished watching seasons 1 to 6 of Oz, thats very good if a little out there in tone in places.

If you don't mind Sci Fi the Battlestar Galatica remake up to about season 4 (I think) is very good, as is the sort of prequel Caprica. I also like Stargate Universe, mostly as it apes BSG.

Another vote here for The Shield; West Wing and Studio 60 are also worth a shout.

I've also just finished watching all of Battlestar Galactica back-to-back; it's really good and kept the whole sci-fi element to a minimum (for a show that is set in space) so it was more about the characters - really worth a look IMO.

I've almost finished watching the last season of 'Deadwood'. Really enjoyed it so far, very political, violent and funny. Fairly true to the time too, with some well known characters and plots. Would definatley recommend it if you haven't already seen it.

24 finished, try for a set of "Underbelly" from Amazon, really enjoyed it myself, onto series 3 in Oz at the moment.

Another vote for The Shield and Sons of Anarchy from me.

I thought The Shield was a little less intelligent than the wire but much faster paced, well worth watching.
