Being outside of the UK, I see quite a few strange adverts here on PH, but the following one caught my eye.

Now, I thought it was just a coincidence that the charity was called 'Mentoring Brothers' and the only people appearing in the advert were of coloured origin.

So I clicked... It would appear that this is a charity is actually just aimed at helping black people.

I'm not trying to come across as racist or anything, but if I started a charity called, lets say, 'Helping Honkeys', I'd be shut down in a second and hit with several lawsuits... Where is the line?

It seems that if you are a minority group, you can treat yourself as a 'special case' but if anyone else does it, it's patronising.

Don't get me started on the United Negro College Fund...

As you were!

I'd like to see the reaction of people if there was a charity helping only white people.

I recently entered an evengelical church in south London, massive sign outside, something along the lines of "everyone welcome, God doesn't discriminate" "praise the lord" etc etc. Like fk, white skinheads most definately weren't welcome by the congregation... the fact that I only wanted directions and they were open early on a Sunday morning didn't seem to matter either wink

It's part of the "Big Brothers/Big Sisters Alliance". Although my polotical views run slightly to the right of Genghis Khan, I find this organization admirable. It is for all underpriveledged (mostly children) regardless of race.

That's fair enough, but I don't see why some charities have to corner themselves in like that. If you want to help people of your own race, then so be it, but why would people of a certain race require help over and above those of another race.

Just baffles me!

You may have misinterpreted their use of the word "brothers". They just did it to show affiliation with the "Big Brothers/Big Sisters" organization. They didn't mean it in the "Yo, dog, was up my bruthu..." way.

Its an outrage.

Its not as if we have a proportion of young back males who perceive that society has little offer them, often no father, finding support in gangs, etc. Why would we need a specific charity offering empathetic, side-by-side, structured, supportive male contact to keep them on the straight and narrow and bring some kind of aspiration into their lives?

I live on the Shetland Islands and we just don't need this kind of thing. Harumph.

They invented a phrase to cover this, Positive Discrimination.

Helping Honkys is a brilliant name for a charity.
