Aircon problem with 2006 Polo, help!!

Hi all,

My wife has a 2006 1.2 VW Polo and over the winter period the aircon has not been used, suprise suprise! As the weather has improved we tried to use the aircon and it was not working. Normally when you use the aircon you can feel the power drain from the car as the engine works extra hard, but on pressing the button there is no reaction what so ever which makes me worry that it could be more than just gas needed, or is this normal with an empty system?? The light still comes on so is it possible that the system just needs refilling or could it be possibly the compressor.
