Would anyone have a photo of where the loom for the ECU enters through the bulkhead into the car.

I have a 94 car and my loom entered through a very large grommet in the centre of the bulkhead directly behind the plenum/intake manifold.

This seems to me a very awkward area, and to be honest the intake manifold and the air pipe joining n/s and o/s cabin air needed to be removed to get proper access.

I am going to leave single loom (alternator and oil pressure/water temp gauges) running through the centre grommet, but want to re-route the new ECU loom.

Would appreciate if someone could post a photo or two to show the position in their car.

On my 98 car the engine loom passes via a large grommet passenger side. Sorry the engine bay is a bit tatty, the pic was taken before tidying. In the pic the heater hoses are to the right of the loom.

Stick your hand down the depths of the footwell / inner wing (where a lot of the car loom is 'stowed') and trace the wiper motor grommet. The ECU loom on later cars is pretty close, just a bit nearer & lower.

I'm not sure the panels are the same though, what with the early cars starting with the battery box high / fusebox low, so you might not find a flat area of f'glass to cut and grommet?????

Found this pic. which shows slightly different route. Is it a pre-cat? Hope it helps.

I would have thought the central postion although awkward is advantageous in terms of keeping the loom further away from the manifolds . . When I did my loom I consider alternate position (I don't have the corrugated air hose as it's an SE) and given the alternates on offer the central location remained the best fit.

How often do you need to get the loom in and out anyway . . . When I did someone else's loom we found that their's had been re-routed through the wiper motor grommet and it was a right bodge job, so we re-routed back to the central location.

Thank you - don't suppose there are an images of the route from inside the car?

Both images are a help. Mine is a 5ltr, but one of the earlier ones, so I suspect it has the same main loom route as the pre-cat cars.

Looking at the first image (blue car) you can see that there is an additional piece of bodywork that seems to be covering the air pipe that runs from o/s to n/s.

I had a right game finding a new grommet that would fit as it is around 70mm.

I think to make the ECU easier to troubleshoot/modifiy in the future I am going to try and take a route in near where the top of the battery would be.

I'm relocating a battery (PC925) into the boot, so have quite a bit of room to play with here.

The central routing keeps the engine bay a bit tidier I suppose, but is a lot harder to remove & install.. You have to strip the plenum & that air duct to get access from the outside, then thread all the loom in the dash (mix of the upper & lower sections in the Chim).

..but as Johnno says it's not like you should have to do it more than once! Just run some spare/extra cables in the loom for future proofing if that is what is worrying you?

The position of the bulkhead hole varies from O/S on the precats, to the centre on early 500's and over to the N/S on later cars....
