Cheers for the heads up. I'm doing a fly-drive in California 10th July to 26th....
I've booked an intermediate convertible from ALAMO, whatever that is

Almost certainly a god-awful Chrysler Sebring...

Thanks. We're off to California in September. You've just saved us about £30 on the car hire. http://www.hertzoffers.com/splash/splash.aspx?Offe...

I actually laughed out loud at that. I have a lot of respect for the Impala - it's an amazing mile muncher, utterly detached from the road, but it's big, quiet, makes a nice noise under acceleration, completely relaxing and gave me 32 mpg (UK). However it's about as decadent as grey flannel trousers from M&S.
As for the Sebring - I've not driven one, and I intend to leave it that way. When I was at SFO lasst year the only convertibles they had were Volvo C70s with the T5 engine, which I think was an immensely lucky escape. YMMV.
My 16 y.o nephew (lives in Illinois) has a 6 year old Sebring convertible for his 1st car - in those circumstances, I wouldn't have said no. I drove it 5 years ago - wallowy, slow, heavy, scuttle shake - tick all of those.
For driving in California, unless you're planning on doing lots of driving, it's not worth going mad. When my eldest brother lived in SoCal I used to spend about 6 weeks/year there=. If I wasn't planning long drives, I used the local 'Rent a Wreck' place for $10/day, incl. Insurance!
