Hi, my girlfriend and I are having a little disagreement, she says cats can talk.

I.e. her cat can say: Hello, byee, NO! and que (in spanish ) we're supposedly talking about a bilingual cat here.

She GENUINELY believes this.

My girlfriend is mental.

Please discuss.

Not so sure about cats but for a dog you can learn to detect it's tone and style of bark and tell what mood it is in from just listening and the dog does the same for your commands.

It is talking in the sense of communication even though it's clearly not the English language.

Of course they can ... Example

If mine want food they say "meow meow" ... meaning food please.

If I kick one it says "MEEEEEEEEEOWWWWWW GRRRRRRRRRR HISSSSSSSS" meaning fk OFF.

I have 3 cats currently, 2 of them I would say just have a regular call that they use to get our attention, normally when hungry or when there name is said.

My little boy cat defintely has a wide vocal range and he uses different types of calls depending on the situation. His most disinctive one is when he is distressed about something, it could be as simple as a door is shut that he wants to go through or he's got himself in an awkward spot (quite common) but when I hear this meow I know straight away he is in a pickle somewhere!

He has his contented voice, his demanding voice, his distressed voice, his I've got confused again voice etc. I would say he is the closest you get to cats talking!!

This is pretty much spot on. Ours definately talks (as in makes noises that have specific meaning) but we've yet to train him to take phone messages when we're out.

We have 4 cats at home (cue old cat lady jokes).

2 of them don't meow or anything. 1 of them seems to try and make conversation with you. If you talk to it, it just meows back. Constantly.

T'other one makes some weird noises and some meows. fk knows what it means though.

Mine makes loud meowing noises and occasionally goes "BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR?"

Not sure what it is actually trying to ask me...

My old cat Tigger, used to stand in front of the fridge screaming "HAAAAAAAAAM". He only used to say that when he wanted us to give him ham. I think he was talking. Cats can talk.
