Chaps,

I have just got an iPhone for the first time and tried to plug it in to the car so I could play music through the speakers. However the hifi could not connect to the device. Bluetooth was connected easily so no problems there.

Any advice as a google search does not provide any answers for me.

The car is a 1 series coupe if it helps and I just have the professional radio and usb connection so no idrive.

Thanks in advance

I'm not fully clued up myself

But i thought you also needed to plug a cable into the AUX port too, this is what carries the audio signal, but i could be wrong.

However, i also thought you needed idrive to control the playlists. Again i could be wrong, but maybe your USB port only allows you to play MP3's from a USB stick...

I have the iDrive/iPod kit, but from what I understand the iphone/ipod will not work through the USB socket. You either need a 3.5mm lead into an Aux connector or just dump your music onto a large USB key instead.

At the moment I am using a USB flash drive with music on, was just hoping that I could control the music on my iphone the same way. My old ipod can only connect to things via firewire so wasn't an issue before. I suppose I can charge via the USB and then play through the 3.5mm, damn.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned but to use the iPod/iPhone with the BMW USB you need the special BMW cable. it has a iPod connector on one and splits into a 3.5mm plug + USB. The car needs the USB to control it but the 3.5mm plug yo playback the sound.

Hope this helps

Trevor is spot on, the lead costs £40.00 from BMW, one of their best selling items so most dealers will have it instock.

Thank you very much, looks like that is what I will have to do. Its a pity as the iPhone was expensive enough, don't want to have to splash out loads on a new lead as well.

Hiya, I also have a 1 series coupe with the pro head unit and USB connectivity. I have the "y" cable which allows for iPod/iPhone connectivity. Since upgrading to iPhone 4 the head unit is no longer able to recognize my music stored on the iPhone. I have looked on the net and so far drawn a blank. Its a pain in backside and knowing BMW, will probably have to pay for some update or new cable....ar$e
