Hi All,

Will be looking at moving into my first house (with my g/f) in the next couple of years so I am currently on a recce for 2/3 bed houses around the £175,000 bracket.

Her wish was Hampshire/Wiltshire area and Ludgershall came up with a few reasonably nice looking houses at good prices. Does anyone have any experience of the area and if its a place to avoid or a decent place to live?

TIA thumbup

P.S. Lack of nightclubs is not an issue as long as it has a decent pub biggrin

Ludgershall makes Andover look Posh.

Nowt there, prices seemed stagnent throughout the last few years. Large Army camp there, also just round corner from Tidworth, so squaddie central.

I cant think of a single nice thing to say about Ludgershall personally.

But you've got to start somewhere, and if this is what you can afford then good luck.

Cheers, as mentioned i'm currently just looking at the sort of house I could afford around hampshire/wiltshire areas. What area's would you recommend?

I would ideally like to avoid towncentres to get somewhere bigger with a garden/parking etc.

Hi,

I lived in Ludgershall for 20+ years before moving further West.

It's very much a so/so small town that has grown a lot over the past few decades which has resulted in it losing its 'sole' and having no real identity. That said if are you purely looking for a place to live and commute from, rather than a social centre, then it's fine.

We moved to Westbury (about 30 miles West) in West Wilts due to the house prices being move competitive and the quality of life is far more relaxed with friendly neighbourhoods and locals.

Happy hunting smile

Thanks. Commuting (M3) seems to be fairly easy from Ludgershall.

The way you describe Westbury sounds ideal for what I am loking for. (I do understand that being 22 and looking for the quiet life is not the norm but spending my formative years growning up in a semi-rural town, its what I prefer smile)

I would be 25ish when I would be activly looking to move.

I really wouldn't move there, have you tried anywhere like Collingbourne or somewhere in the Vale of Pewsey?

FWIW I commute to Andover daily from Westbury (and then get the train to London 3 days a week frown) and it takes about 40 minutes; Basingstoke is an hour.

I lived in Westbury for 2 years and our opinions differ slightly

Westbury is a dive IMO, it has all the pretence and appearance of being a nice little Wiltshire Village but once you scratch the surface it all changes

There are 2 major pubs, opposite each other in the Market Place, if you dont like the people in one, then dont bother going to the other as they all cross over during the night anyway

It has (had) a poxy independant supermarket called Coopers and thats it for shopping really

On the industrial estate is the areas pretty much only nightclub it was called Reflections when I was there, again a hellhole mainly frequented by squaddies from Warminster who aren't averse to kicking people to death outside there when the mood takes them

The Kebab shop is good, I got on well with Ahmed

Oh and of course you have the (legal) pikey campsite just down the road in Bratton

Nearest big towns are Trowbridge (pikey hell) or Warminster (squaddy hell)

I would avoid if I were you OP and I was 21 when I was living there so similar age

ETA: I was always taken with Bradford Upon Avon when I visited it but I think that may be in the wrong direction for you

You As has been suggested the Value of Pewsey or perhaps you could consider Devizes, so long as you don't mid a trip across the plain.
