I know most Phers probably wouldn't go within 100 yards of one of these things, but if it became obvious that things weren't quite right, what would be your reaction?

"I went through the rollers and the rinse wash, but as I approached the blowers, they didn't lift up as they were meant to. They were coming straight for the middle of the windscreen, and all I could do was dive as far down into the passenger seat as I could – I thought I was waiting for death."

Does a car get 'locked' into position? Surely this bloke could have reversed out or something?

Depends if there was a car behind him or not. I don't think I would risk reversing out because in my head things wouldn't be designed with that in mind, any damage would then be your own fault for breaking the rules and you'd have to prove the fans were going to hit you.

I guess you'd have the engine off, and not actually believe you'd get hit until they are a foot from the screen

You must have the reaction time of a fly then, as they normally go up about 30cm from the window...

I went through this actual wash a month or so ago and no, its a lot closer than 30cm when it moves. I must admit I too was getting worried despite all the signs saying "dont brake, it will move up!"

It was the first and last time I would go through it, I didn't trust it one little bit

I drive past this place every day on my way to/from work. The wash are denying any liability at all, even to the point where they reported the vehicle they lent him as stolen.Maybe he moved forward when he shouldn't have done,I don't know.I'm sure the HSE will be paying a visit to get to the bottom of the matter though.
