So conundrum...

Meeting the prospective in-laws for the first time in a restaurant.

Should I insist on paying the bill?

Or let the Dad if he insists? There by not diminishing his status?

Thanks in advance on a tricky one.

Peace out.

Offer to pay, if he says no, then offer to buy the wine.

If he still insists, let him pay, and say thank you.

I think the OH asked them, so I assumed it would come down to me to pay.

But by all accounts the Dad is quite a gruff man's man, and not wanting to put him on the wrong foot and all that at first meeting, as this one is in all probability a keeper.

Peace.

Does the inviter pay for the invitee's dinner?

I would suggest that is the correct approach.

You invite someone for dinner, you pay.
Sounds fair to me.

Get an iphone app that disects the bill into fractions of a penny automatically allowing for who had the extra bread roll and who didn't have a coffee and take bags of small change with you to insure you can tender exactly your share of the bill.

That'll impress 'em.

try not to make a big deal of it. Offer to pay before he does, if he insists then accept graciously and thank him personally afterwards as well as adding that next time it's your turn.

If he makes it clear that paying is "his thing" then next time maybe order and pay for some champagne before dinner or send potential MIL some flowers and invite him for a pint.

Make them pay, then fk their daughter while thinking about the free meal you just got.

Best night ever.

"for fcensoreds sake man, Mrs Brother D promised I could smash her back doors in if tonights dinner went well, I'm gagging to get home"

Then retire to the drawing room with port and cigars and discuss with him exactly how many ways you're going to fk his daughter bandy that very evening.

Potential Father-In-Laws love that sort of stuff.
