The old man is after a car..

He is getting rid of his old E-class as it is too big for him. His car previous to the E-class was an Audi A4.

The A4 was utterly reliable..

I have recommended he look at a 2005 2.0Tdi Passat (newer shape).

I'll admit, i have not seen a Passat up close in person, but surely they arent in the same catogery as a E-class..

A4/Passat are on the same platform aren't they? (C segment?)

Yep, they are. Although I think I'm correct in saying that most Passat chassis are a generation behind their contemporary A4, and usually slightly bigger, particularly in estate format.

the passat isn't just the same size as the audi, its basically the same thing. if you ask me buying a passat after an e-class would be downgrading.

If you had my old mans E-class, you would have burned it.

It cost him 6-7k in the 18 months he had it. Two gearboxes, this is despite it having a Behr radiator.

Throw in a couple of control arms, constant bushes and ball joints needing replacing..

He will never buy another Mercedes again in his life...

Lovely looking motor with 18" AMG wheels and fully kitted out. But absolutely shocking build quality

EDIT: I also forgot about the rust on the driver side front and the boot lid...

For a 2004 motor..

Small garage, and my mother would be driving it mostly...

He tends to prefer his workvan tbh. My mom hated the E-class due to its massive arse

I agree on the focus. Unfortunately my mother is a Stubborn one..

She wants a car like a "Volkswagen"..which are probably inherently unreliable after 2004..

2005 Passat is bigger than a 2005 A4.

Passat is based on Golf chassis.

Last A4 I had was a 2005 Avant, the car was really cramped, especially in the rear seats, I have driven Passats a lot recently and they are noticably larger, I am not overly convinced on the build quality on either brand as I have had silly niggles with both cars.

This new shape passat feels bigger than an a4 . I knew it's based on the previous golf platform don't know more than that . Just don't get one with a dpf , unless you drive at 50 mph constantly for 10 minutes a few days a week

It's diesel particulate filter , what it does is stop all dirty particules that come out of diesel engine . My car has one and when I floor it there is no black smoke coming out the exhaust like a normal diesel .

Mine comes on once a week due to the type of driving I do . It cleans itself when driving on the mway ( burns all the soot ) when at more than 50 mph in 4 th gear

If it needs changing it's about 1500 quid to replace . You can take the dpf out but it costs about 1100 quid , that also remaps the engine if you want more power

I've a 2001 Passat Estate and in the road there are also a 2000 A6 Avant and a 2002 A4 Avant, the Passat is looks between the two but rear leg room in the A4 is rubbish, A6 and Passat loads of room.

Other than recuring (from the dozens of bills in the history) cam cover oil leaks the Passat seems to be well built.

I spent a number of hours in car supermarkets hoppping in the back of different estate cars.
According to my notes the Passat rear doors have got large armsets which butt in and use up too much rear space (e.g. if you want to ever have 3 in the back)
Audi A6
V70
Mazda 6 (surprisingly)
were much better

The passat estate is 4 inches (100mm) longer 2.5 inches (65mm) wider and 1" (25mm)taller than the Audi A4 i have one and my cousin has the A4. good car very economical 2.0Tdi140 but plenty of power when you need it. i drove the Eclass a few years ago and the Passat seems as well built as the Eclass but a lot less costly to run.
