Sorry... I absolutly HATE the metric system for measuring speed or distance. Darn numbers are just tooooo small. Oooooo... 100 (KPH!) Nope... I like my 60MPH = 1 mile....
BUT! Enough of that banter.

On the side note...
The speedo is not difficult to remove. It will take some patients and you will be looking at a "lap" full once you get it off. Just get into whatever circus trick body contorted place you can to get under the dash. Remove the bolts that hold on the insturment cluster (binnacle). The speedo cable unscrews and the speedo is held in place by a mettal bar secured by two round nuts that should not be but "finger" tight...

Drive topless!!!

Unless you want a digital one like I just ordered, I am afraid you are stuck with what you have or trying to find a used one. Maybe someone in the UK is parting a car out. The VDO guage is "obsolete" acording to a big VDO shop here I called. Most people say our VDO guages are POS's anyway. And it seems that every single speedo dies by around 50K miles anyway. It is like Lotus was trying to do better than the Smiths guages they always used (do all Smiths guages come with a little rubber hammer to tap them with so the needle will get moving? Or is this something added at the show room?) Anyway, I think Lotus was trying to improve on the Smiths, so they went with the German made VDO's, but unfortunately they got the worst VDO guage made. They just didn't know any better.

This is awesome! I thought it would be a hrder process to un-install the speedo. But one question comes to mind ... what would stop someone from just disconecting the speedometer so that the mileage would cease ??? Im afraid that my car may have more mileage than really shows ?? Is this possible, or is there some sort of fail-safe against this ??

thanks for the help for leads on aftermarket speedos, I am interested in only an original one that matches the rest of the instruments.
