I have never really been terrified in a car* (not that I am not a big girl given half a chance), slightly uncomfortable and uneasy but never terrified, I did a thread a while back about scaring your passengers and it was decided it wasnt big and wasnt clever but ever had the tables turned, either by bad driving or just sheer acceleration/speed/cornering ?

I really fancy going in something ballistic, anyone been there and regretted it ? or do I need to book a ride in an Acrobatic Aircraft to get that buzz, in fact can you book passenger rides in really quick stuff on track, and I dont mean a well ragged Y reg Ferrari 360, I mean, really quick.

  • Bikes dont count, they get me every time, throttle sticking on my mates CBR 600 and us flying over a roundabout was one, uncles GSXR100 in about 1990, never experienced acceleration like that before or since. Push Bikes dont count either, nearly 50 mph on one in the Lakes a couple of weeks back was pretty scary.

Many years ago, getting a lift home from a party in the wee hours in AH Sprite down the Oxford ring road.
Not a lot of traffic and we're hurtling (relatively speaking for a Sprite) down past the Cowley works towards the roundabout (now replaced by traffic lights).
In my half-awake state, I'm thinking "this is a bit fast. I hope he's going to brake in time". Then I hear "Oh, st!"
We survived hitting the kerb and bouncing over the grass on the roundabout and didn't hit any posts or signs but it sure counted as scary.

When my dad took me for a drove in an R33 Skyline running 400BHP.

He usually drives normal but he was sideways at every cross and on the limiter. I got out whote as a sheet barely able to walk.

Riding shotgun in a Fire engine, no two in a convoy heading for a housefire. The lead driver took the wrong exit from a roundabout, my driver followed, just as the lead driver realised his mistake and hit the brakes. Contrary to popular opinion fire engines do NOT stop in their own length, we shortened the lead engine by about six feet.

Learn to freefall and work you way up the CAT stages... fun, and it's cheaper than track days...

Coming to a stop on a motorway and having the driver look in the mirror and say "Oh st" was pretty scary.

Fortunately the lorry almost stopped in time and only shoved us forward three feet or so.

GTR.

Went out for a spin in the Nissan press car a couple of years ago that was hot off the press from Top Gear at the time.

I knew it would be fast but bugger me was it quick. Some silly cornering speeds too.

For me it's not the speed or power of the car you're a passenger in thats scary, it's the drivers lack of talent.

Sometimes it doesn't require speed. Another guy in my year offered to give me a lift home after we had finished a clinic. 1L micra, harmless right? Nope. Casual chat in the car of how long he had been driving, transpired he had passed his test the day before. "Finesse" was lacking. Coming to a stop some people will go 4th to 1st, but most used the brake before going into 1st. Not this one. 40mph, into 1st, off the clutch quickly, thrown forward in the seat. Happened all the way home. Didn't have the heart to tell him otherwise.

I was in a mates Audi R8 recently and he was overtaking with cars coming head on,narrowly avoiding and stopping bonnet to bonnet with some guy.As we drove around him we were hit by a can of Red Bull! Bloody cheek! Now that was scarey.

I would very much agree with this. I have mostly been scared by bad drivers in slow cars.

To answer the OP, I've been in some very quick cars (Radical for instance), but the driver was great so I absolutely loved it. I was so impressed that I sold my racing Caterham and went single seater racing!

It's bad driving that scares me the most. My girlfriend's Dad has frightened me the most I think. Inches from the back if other cars on wet roads, driving on the hard shoulder, and he even did a U turn without looking. That was just the one trip; I avoid riding with him now.

A mate had a 1.0 saxo with a canvas roof, the performance was awful so he made up for it by not using the brakes. Every corner/roundabout was taken with all the speed the car could muster followed by lifting off midway through resulting in massive oversteer. Humpback bridges meant air time and downhill sections of the motorway involved disengaging the clutch for a couple more mph, all in a car with the structural rigidity of an asda crisp packet.
