It actually strikes me as strange.
You get well educated people in high paid jobs/roles and as you look down the line they all seem to be fking useless so they get a big payoff for fking things up.
Then at the bottom end is the great british average joe works hard on small pay generaly happy that he has a job and can pay the bills enjoy a bbq on a nice weekend with the family and friends then gets back to monday morning to be told they are making redundancies due to company going through hard times.

So this is how they should solve the problem send big cheese to job centre so he can experiance the real world then employ average joe to do the top job pay him same money and watch the buisness thrive.

These people are only paid to be the fall guys when things go wrong.
The real work is done by everyone underneath them. He just signs papers and ticks boxes.

If the many people below him fk up then it's his head on the chopping board.

For another example of this see Tony Hayward and pretty much any CEO of a large company.

The thing that got me the most about this story is not the large salaries (I've got nothing against paying for talent per se) but the large differrences between the top earner's salaries. Why, for example, does the Olympic Delivery Authority CEO earn more than twice the head of MI6? And how does the head of the Horserace Betting Levy Board earn more than the director general of MI5?

These people are highly paid for their qualifications and education status.
Nearly everybody is capable of any top job but the avaerage joe won't because he would not even get an interview as qualifications and education would stop him at the first.
Because people have been to top schools does not make them buisness savvy as i said the average joe could do no worse than the next but his pay could be kept the same which could make or break a company's payoff bill also the confidence in shareholders.

I wouldn't mind working under those conditions!

"hedders, we are going to pay you £50,000 a week to be our figurehead, but there is a downside. If you make a balls up off it, i am afraid you will have to accept a massive settlement, and a lucrative pension deal."

I like the way they knocked a pound of most of the salaries like the supermarkets do to make their prices look cheaper.

It doesn't quite work for £394,999 biggrin

It should be "Nearly everybody is capable of being capable of any top job"..

It's all about willing.

There are exceptions where the CEOs actually have huge influence over what happens and has a very unique skill set (I'm looking at Steve Jobs)...

So all the people who fked around with their education, cant be arsed at the moment (benefits scroungers) and many many people who for want of a better word just aint intelligent enough can nearly all run a company as CEO according to you?

fkin hell man you are having a laugh rofl I know some absolute geniuses that have trouble tying their own shoes and should never be let out of the think tank, let alone near a company were resonsiblity, common sense, etc are needed...

Go on tell me how you think that... remember nearly everyone would be classed as 90-95 of the population of working age in the UK. Also if they can do it according to you, why are they happy in dead end jobs on crappy wages when they could be living the high life?

He didn't say they could do the job well, just do the job for a while until everyone realises they are in fact, useless. Much like what happens now, with the silver spoon brigade.

Networking is 90% of working life, imo. I've always got my jobs through a friend, or a friend of a friend.

I want to be part of the silver spoon brigade... then I could take one of these jobs and moonlight doing another one... £800k a year for a 6 day week bossing people around.

You're confusing capability with an unwarranted sense of entitlement. On the whole, the best people really do get the best jobs. These are intelligent, hard working and focused people. I'm not saying that every person in a high position deserves it; far from it, there's many examples of people that have been promoted way beyong their competency. However, on average, the best people do get the best jobs. Just because you can't easily see the skills doesn't mean that they're not there. And just because you think you could do better doesn't mean you can.

So if a company only needs a fall guy leader then why not employ the first chav they can find stick them up on the high chair till disaater strikes give them the golden handshake and send them back.

Status and standing i think comes before buisness acumen and hard work and the ability to do the job requiered. The circles that ceo's,directors and the like have to mix in would not be welcomeing an average guy/girl as there is the upper, middle and working class.

You don't get many average guys/girls that have been appointed top roles for there ability alone.

This topic reminds me of that film trading places(eddie murphy)
I never neglected my education for me it just wasn't available and like so many people i come into contact with there are those who have become a supervisor and are incaparble of doing a half decent job then there are those who have been left out of the promotion ladder but can manage to do their own and their managers roles without a problem.

From what i witnessed i do belive if the stigma of classes and education background was not so much needed on a cv then there would be more people in roles which would be suitable to them and the companys they work for.
