Hi all

My mate has just bought a brilliant barge. Its a 1995 5-Series BMW. Its been sat in a barn for the last 6 years and is absolutely mint. Leather looks like its never been sat in, no rust anywhere, FSH, immaculate inside and out. So good in fact he won my prestigious bi-monthly 'Best car in car park 2' award at the place where i work. He only paid £400 for it and i love it....

Only problem is that yesterday on the way home, he overtook me and i noticed a stream of Brown/Redish smoke pouring from the exhaust.

Any ideas? Do i need to take the award back from him or is it nothing?

Cheers

I would guess its crap in the exhaust but the first thing I would do is flush the engine and box and then service the car.

It's been sat for ages right? Is that not just rust dust being blown from inside the exhaust?

Just sounds like unburnt fuel to me. depending on if the light catches it might look brown, the rust problem wouldnt work like that and wont last long at all.

Petrol goes off over time now doesn't it? or is that a myth?

No its not a myth and it is quite possible for a car sitting around doing nothing for years on end to have a fair bit of water in the tank. I generally work on two weeks for pump fuel if left standing before the butane level drops. In this case the tank will have accumulated a fair amount of lacquer and the fuel will now be quite dense which could lead to over fuelling.

Either way it needs replacing and the tank flushing to limit problems down the line.
