Cost for Road Tax on a 2002 BMW 540i - Where's it going?

Away to look at a BMW E39 2002 540i Auto, but I have a question after looking on Parkers.

4 Sep 2000 – 1 Mar 2001 £112.75 £205.00
1 Mar 2001 – 1 Jun 2003 £134.75 £245.00 K 295g/km)

What's going to happen in 2011 and 2012 etc, will it be up in the top £450 band? I know there are different rules for pre 2001 and pre 2006 cars.

I've got a mate with a Mazda 6 MPS which falls into the higher tax band. One of his customers has the exact same car, built a couple of months earlier and it qualifies for the lower tax band. Same car, same CO output yet @ £200+ pounds difference in tax!.

I think My mates problem comes with this bit:

Band: K*
CO2 (g/km): 201-225
Tax: £245



Band: L
CO2 (g/km): 226-255
Tax: £425


*Band K includes cars that have a CO2 figure over 225g/km but were registered before 23 March 2006.

I think his car was registered 3 weeks after 23rd March 2006 (just his luck!)

Not sure if this is the exact car that the OP is looking at , but this does not look too much of an increase.

IIRC 1 March 2001 (vehicles prior to this are calculated on engine size) to pre 23rd March 2006 car were U turned or increase were postponed at the minimum,

VED rates for 2011 have not yet been annouced so the simple answer no one knows. They'll probably be in the autumn spending statement.
