strong petrol smell from V8S

Have a really strong smell of petrol from the car and this seems to be associated with a fuel consumption of around 10-12mpg.....

If I have clothes in the boot, they smell of petrol...
Any ideas??

could it be a leaking petrol filler pipe? the one from the filler cap that goes to the tank via the boot ? perhaps when you fill up and when you corner hard and the petrol surges it could be leaking into your boot? loose or broken jubilee clip or perished rubber connecting pipe...

either that or the tank itself is leaking ?

The V8S can tend to smell of fuel if its overfuelling - that could be down to an injection problem off the top of my head I think an airflow meter fault or temp sender fault (so the ECU thinks the engine is cold) can cause overfuelling.
Also if there's a problem with the air flow meter connection it will default to a rich limp home map.

Is the exhaust very black and sooty? If so its burning the fuel, the spark plugs will be black too.

Does not seem to be as powerful either. Had the car remapped at Austec a while back...certainly not 240hp at the back wheels anymore.

I do get a feel that its over revving all the tine or the engine is spinning over too fast and yet at idle its doing 1000rpm..

At that rate of consumption I would be looking for a leak or a new car, seriously though driven normally I would be amazed if the engine could run using that ratio of petrol,I think I would be looking for a leak, bearing in mind the recent weather it could eveaporate at an alarming rate.
