Cambridge Audio, DacMagic, volume control with Spotify??

HI all, just got the aformentioned DAC (which seems pretty decent bit of kit) but, when it's plugged in to my laptop the hardware volume buttons (i.e. the + and - volume buttons on the lappy keyboard) no longer work??? They move the "main" volume graphic slider up and down, but only the "wave" volume control seems to affect the output via the DAC?? Anyone got a fix for this??
(i've got used to the easy to use buttons, rather than having to use the mouse to drag the volume slider around on the playing application etc)
Also, on another note, i think Spotify are being a bit naughty with the "premium high bit rate" service, because, unless you actually go and tick the "high bit rate" box, which is buried deep in the menus, you only get the std "freebee" bit rate! Wonder how many peeps havent actually found this out yet??
