Its normal for a diff to get warm, but if you think its overly hot then make sure you check the diff oil level, and check for any signs of leaks on the diff

whgat car is it?
is it modified in any way?
how fast were you going ?
used to race a classic aston martin a long time ago and had the same problem, the inboard brakes caused the diff to overheat, fitted a cooler an all o.k

nope, thats too hot in my experience of them. If its the original diff internals from the 4x4 Sierra, it will have viscous cartridge LSD fitted too. They dont like getting too hot either, and can cause the silicone fluid in the cartridge to break down, making the diff little more than an open diff, reduces the LSD locking action to near zero.
any funny noises that suggest too little backlash (whines) or possibly a bearing siezed/damaged?
