I know that the recent increase in insurance premiums has already been discussed here on the forum and the reasons have been well documented.

So when my renewal came through having gone up about £4 a month I wasn't surprised, I just rubbed my hands together and dived into the sea of comparison websites, brokers and insurance call centres to do my normal trick of beating the cost back down...

But for the first time in my car driving life I haven't been able to find a cheaper quote! O_o

On like for like insurance it seems that my current insurer (Hastings) are still the best priced deal out there for me... Fair play to them. They will be retaining my business for a second year (the first ever insurance company to do so).

Not really cutting edge news, but I was so surprised I felt the need to share. Night all. biggrin

Same thing happened to me last week, for the first time in about 10 years my auto-renewal was actually a bit cheaper than last year, and it's the best quote i could get.

Maybe enough people have wised up to the "year one loss leader followed by 20% renewal markup" (ie: lazy tax) strategy most insurers were following, and now they're trying something else.

Slightly off topic, but I wonder how many younger drivers (18-22) have also had the same premium despite an accident free year of motoring and perhaps an (additional) year of NCB.

Surely in this case it's reasonable to expect premiums to fall by a notable amount because of the lower risk as manifested in nearly doubling the number of years you've been driving without accidents?

I've noticed some younger drivers have had an increase in premiums but are then unable to get lower quotes elsewhere.
Could be possible that insurers are looking to unload higher risk drivers but if they renew benefit (unless a claim occurs) from extra premium.

my renewal came through at £70 cheaper. However no other company was able to get even close! Normally its quite easy to get at least two companies out doing each other.

Don't worry us (safe) young ones are still going down. I started off at £1500 the first year, £1000 the second, £800 the third and am currently looking at around £550 for my fourth year.

Well this year with an extra year of NCB my renewal quote was down by £100 and the actual new policy I took out was £400 cheaper. Still too expensive in my eyes though given that I've gone 5 years now with not a single crash or speeding ticket.

That's promising smile

Who are you with?

Got my first year renewal coming up and even though it's a month away I've been getting some quotes (from other insurers, renewal quote from existing insurer still to come).

Paying £1,500 this year. Is sub-£1,000 too much to ask for the upcoming year with 1yr experience and NCB under my belt? biggrin

Have just signed up to do the RoADA course and have PassPlus too... don't think either count for much though although PassPlus did save me a few quid with current policy...

Funny you should say that. I'm 23 and acquired my 3rd year of NCB this year. My renewal (£460) was about the same as my previous year's premium. I did negotiate a few more thousand miles added to the policy for no additional cost, however. I find you can get money knocked off your quote if you talk nicely to someone on the other end of the phone.

But yes, both myself and friends are not getting the drop in premiums you might expect from getting addtional NCB at our age.

ETA - i know you said 18-22 but i geneally consider younger drivers to be 17-25 smile

This thread just prompted me to check my renewal just now. Direct Line sent me the note last wekk, £561 to renew which I thought was a bit steep and certainly more than last year by about £100 I reckon.

Cheapest quote on Gocompare - £451, with Swiftcover?

Looks like I'll be moving for the first time in years as DL seem to have just jumped up £100.

And I've just gone onto DL website and got a quote for £464. Cheky feckers.

Now, do I phone DL up and demand same rate, or go elsewhere? I'm minded to take my business elewhere jut becuase of their fking me around with my renewal.

You can generally get better quotes than on the websites by phoning directly and getting companies to bid against each other.

Admiral take the mick with our renewals every year. My GF's Mitsi Colt renewal came through at £418, up from about £380 the year before, despite an extra year's no claims. A quick online quote as a new customer with Admiral (changed surname slightly, address changed to next door, as it won't quote you otherwise) came back at £291. Rang them up, told them what we'd done, they matched it it no problem. One phonecall saved nearly £130! If that hadn't been the cheapest quote we'd had, we'd have told them to stick it.

Well I am currently with...Quinn Direct paperbag

But am looking at comparison sites for that £550 figure. (Endsleigh currently cheapest) That being said though I am only in a 1.1 Pug 206 so nothing to write home about.

I am getting quoted about £850 for a MK2 MR2 2.0 Turbo though so it can't all be THAT bad and a 1.9 CDTi Astra H is around £650-£700.

My only problem at the moment though is weather to go for the MR2 for fun, or buy an Astra van so I then have 2 vans for the business. (double the work can be done)

Decisions, Decisions!

yes That's what I did with them last year; managed to save about £150 of my renewal. Unfortunately for me, in December last year someone drove into the side of me on a roundabout and the claim is still not resolved. My renewal came through yesterday; jumped from £410 to £1230!! Not impressed; not least because they appear to have added an extensive list of modifications to my car that don't exist mad

I shall be having words with them on Monday smash

Paid around £1200 last year, aged 20 with 0NCB, MX-5, TPFT.

Renewal would have worked out at over £1000 including the credit charge, had I just let the policy continue.

Changed to Fully Comp, new quote £728 including brake, suspension & induction modifications. Same company - Elephant - noone else came close.

I was very successful in beating my renewal quote this year. I'm with Bell and last year cost £850-ish, my renewal came in last week at...£1028! Background info, 20y.o. male, driving 3 years, 2 years NCB on a corsa diesel.

After a few hours of mundane form filling on every website I could find, confused came out with a great quote of £470 with Admiral, which I am very happy with as I think it's unusually low for my circumstances.

On the plus side - Surprisingly this has already become the most successful thread I ever started! Lol.

On the negative side - I'm in my late 20's with 7 years ncb, drive a Civic 1.5 worth £600 and yet I can't find insurance for less than £360 a year. What the heck?!? Stayed up all evening trying every site I can think off... I'll try phoning round a few places tomorrow and Monday... Then I'll give up and just grumble for a month till something else happens to shift my 'thing that annoys me' focus else ware. ¬_¬

(edited for spelling and grammar... it's late ok...)
