cooling down period?

I always take my time in warming her up before we open the taps but once i get home and get her tucked up in the garage i only let her settle a few min's before i turn her off.
I thought that like in traffic she'll just get hotter.
So what is the correct way to do it, was reading another forum and someone mentioned letting it tick over for half an hour.

Thats kind of what i thought, but only had mine a few months and wanted to be sure i wasn't doing damage

Doesn't matter how hot it is just turn it off. Never heard of letting them idle to cool them down

All I do is cool the car down with a very gentle low revs cruise home for the last mile or so, then I turn the car off and leave it on the drive to cool before putting it in the garage

Thats what i've been doing but straight in garage.

Turbo cars yes, let them 'cool' down before turning them off so as not to bugger the bearings on the turbo. TVR don't bother, off she goes when I stop for the day after checking the oil.

I would never shut down my Tamora, or my old Tuscan, if the fans were still running. The heat soak/buildup when you shut the engine off is bad enough normally, never mind when the water temp is in the mid to high 90`s.

is it best to check oil when warm? always thought it was ment to be done from cold

As said before, a gentle drive home for the last few miles and she's never hot enough to have the fans running.

My post was mainly in response to this comment. There are times when it is not possible to "have a gentle cruise" to cool things down.

Dry sump in the S6 - needs to be done when warm, just after turning off. (IIRC)

Interesting thread.

It was a very hot day yesterday and when I got home the water temps were in the mid to high 90's. I parked the car in the garage and let her idle for a few mins then turned the engine off. I turned the key on (not ignition) and let the fans do their thing for a few more minutes. When they shut off, I turned her off and let her rest for the night.

I wouldn't want to just turn her straight off as soon as I got back, I'd worry the temps would get too high.

Edited - yes the F1 remark was stupid so took it out.

I suspect you guys are largely wasting your time.

A gentle drive home will allow e.g. brakes to cool down a bit. But the engine temperature isn't going to magically drop to 40C. Leaving her idling will just warm her up, and even leaving the fans on but engine off isn't great, as the water won't be circulating.

I just drive her home gently for the last few miles, and switch her off. I wait three hours before putting the car cover on, but that is to avoid condensation.

My Fans don't/won't run unless the engine is actually running??

And this is a daft comparison. The F1 cars overheating ARE RUNNING, and have NO FANS on the cooling system. You do have fans, and you can switch her off.
