Introductory letter / CV

Good morning to all you good PH folk
I am after some advice regarding sending out an introductory letter. I want to send a letter to local Building Surveying and Consultancy firms introducing myself and outlining the skills that I have. I have never sent this type of letter before so are not sure how to word it and are not sure if I should include my CV.
A little background on me if it’s relevant for your replies. I have 7 years experience in the construction Industry (Project Surveying, Estimating, Maintenance, etc.) and have recently completed a full time Building Surveying degree.
Has anybody had any experience writing this letter (good/bad) and has anyone received this kind of thing that could give feedback?

I would write the email as a covering letter with your CV attached.
Keep the covering letter short and to the point. The only purpose it serves is to get them to read the CV.
Something like
Please find attached a copy of my CV. I am a chartered surveyor with seven years experience currently looking for a new position in a private consultancy/estate agency.
Perhaps include a reason you are looking, such as wanting to move to private sector from local government.
And sign off with something like "If you have any further questions or would like to arrange an interview then please get in touch on..."

Crikey, a written letter. One client of mine asked for me to fax a CV through once, and people in my office thought he was from the stone age! That was in 2004.
Yes email is fine and I would think much more likely to be read.
Email can be formal, so write the same as you would in a letter. It's just a much quicker and more convenient way of sending it.
