As its only Clarkson I read in the Times have not subscribed. Mind you its costing me more to buy a coffee and read their customer copy.

As someone always buys me one of Clarkson's books for Christmas, I felt no guilt in moving straight to the telegraph and herald sites.

People wont pay for news on the internet anymore than they would pay for music...

I wouldn't pay for online news as the BBC gives me enough news - however, I did hear that the Times has worked out that they'll get a 90% drop in viewers and the remaining 10% will pay - and it's that 10% that will still turn a profit for The Times.

Personally, I think it'll fall flat on its face as there are too many other online news agencies.

I won't pay, like many others I have just moved to another source of news. It will be interesting to see in a couple of months if it has been a success.

They really have misunderstood the market.

Although cannily it makes me more likely to buy the paper again so maybe it's not so wrong.

The Gruaniad had a picture of a doormat with welcome on it for Times readers on Friday.

This! Is the quality of journalism in The Times really worth the membership fee? I can only see die hard, tunnel-visioned readers signing up, whereas the majority of viewers will migrate to other news websites that are free ...

It's a bold move, but I doubt many others will follow suit.

but how many people will pay for the iPad app......
Lots I suspect which will fund this. Strange how people will not pay for content online, but when presented with a content consumption device packaged well there is no objection.

Odd isn't it. Particularly when the site worked perfectly well through the mobile browser anyway.

I imagine the drop will be considerably more than 90%.

Quite. I bet the ones that pay number less than 5%. 2-3% is my guess.

I can get online news that I pay for already (BBC) and there are countless other free sites. I'd love to know their conversion rate from free trial period to paying subscriber...

Yes.

Yes.

Maybe, it would be a very embarrassing turn around! I get the impression Murdoch would rather see them go under.

My only concern is where to get free Friday tickets to the Goodwood FoS next year!!
And no, I'm not paying £50+ for a ticket - crazy price.

I agree, but its dfunny isnt it. We dont mind paying money for a newspaper, but we have a big problem paying for the same news/information when its online. Strange...
