Sorry to bore you lot with this qusetion but...i sold my Boxster S last year and i am now in the market for a new one. Problem is having looked around the classified ads there seem to be some very well priced C2 C4 911's 89-99 around the £30-35K mark. Is there some thing of depression in prices since i last looked - i am tempted?

Those would be pre-facelift cars...

Its horses for courses I'd say. Do you want or need the rear seats?

Rear seats not essential. I think i am being just being drawn by the thought of some thing different by setting aside my perceived worries about running costs.

Well - the car will be older than the BoxS you might otherwise buy - but it should be fundamentally as reliable. If you really want something different why not have it? After all - you've had a Box S. Sure I've had two but that's because I'm convinced..

I had a good look at both a Boxster S and the 993 series before buying the latter. There's not a lot of difference in carrying capacity except for the fact that, if ever it were necessary, the 993 can pack in some extra people for short journeys - sometimes a useful facility.
The main things that attracted me were the extra grunt and the more solid top. I'm never really happy parking a rag-top where some low-life can do significant damage, and I feel that the temptation must be there in their tiny minds. That said, I bought a Targa, which seems to be the best of both worlds. That wide opening glass roof is wonderful at almost any time of the year and it closes up even quicker than a Boxster's rag top.
Whichever you go for, good luck - they're both great cars!

The years 89-99 cover 3.2, 964, 993 and 996 models.

Your spending level £30-35K covers 3.2 (Speedster) 964 (probably only RS) all 993 models (except Turbo) and a lot of the 996 range.

Huge choice there!

Thanks all.

To be specific it is a 996 C4 i am most tempted by. There is very nice looking V plate model on the Top Marques web-site for example at 34K some thing. Prices can go down to 30K though for a 98....

Well the C4 is certainly a proper car. Its the one I'd buy - if not going further upmarket to the C4S or even Turbo. Its damn fast and has 4WD handling...the PSM system is particularly clever with respect to the 4WD cars.

Be aware - in 4WD Porsches the front boot is a joke in comparison to the Boxster/996C2 as the space is taken up by the 4WD system. However there is the luggage space behind the seats which is more than adequate.

Enjoy! If I didn't have my Boxster S - its probably the car I'd buy...

You are stuck between a rock and hard place...

Boxster-will be replaced next year...watch those prices tumble....

996...replaced this year with the 997..ditto the above plus the C4 is nowhere as much fun to drive as a standard Boxster on 17" wheels.

993..they just feel so old and archaeic..it doesnt feel natural paying so much for such an old car especially since they are now so old that "fresh" cars are so few and far between..but if you find a really nice one at around 25k then go for it.

Of all of them I think I would find the cheapest 2.7 Boxster at around 22k safe in the knowledge that it wont go much below 15k. A 996 is going to be depreciation hell as its just not a classic...it will be the 924/944 of this era...I am so glad I got rid of mine when I did.

Finally, be ,mindful that if the car is from a Porsche dealer or specialist then there will be at least a 4k margin and expect to loose this absolutely immediately as you will never achieve anwhere near the same price if you need to sell it.

Put the cat among the pigeons!

When i was selling my Boxster every loony in the SE came knocking. The car was the the right colour, spec and mileage and priced very competively - but i still ended up selling to a independant dealer cos of the hassle. I always seem to be unlucky selling but poor at buying at the right price.

Should i be driving very hard to push the price down on a C4? What would you pay for a tidy 99V C4 with 40K, silver, black leather and a few toys?

Surprise me......

This question was asked to one of the staff at the Porsche Club Great Britain and the rather amusing reply was in this months Porsche Post...

...911 or Boxster? I devised a simple test:

"Do you have a mechanical or quartz wristwatch?"
-"er, battery quartz."

"Do you play LP's or CD's?"
-"CD's of course."

"Do you have a manual 35mm camera or a point and shoot automatic camera?"
-"A little pocket camera, Minolta I think."

"Who's the best, Senna or Schumacher?"
-"Schuey."

"You should buy a Boxster S - You won't be disappointed!"

Brilliant I thought!

Oh and Boxster - Rolex Sea Dweller / CD's / Canon Ixus V / Schuey of course!

Care to take the test?

Edited to say - You are in a win win situation they are both great cars. Try them both.

OK, I'll have a go:

Rolex Explorer II, CDs, crap old 35 mm camera (would like a nice modern digital camera - small-ish one), Senna.

..........and a Boxster S.

I would prefer a GT3/Turbo/GT2/RS etc though.

That questionaire was on the 911 clubsport section and did raise a smile...the more mechanical nature of the older 911 is appealing to many....having owned both old and new i can understand this...having driven them as competent as they are i will certainly suprise myself if i ever own a Boxster S.

Although an older 996 may be better for resale in a few years time.

A new boxster or next to new one will still have some of it's lovely 3 year warrenty. Although thier pretty good there still seems to be a few mechanical problems from time to time on older 996s.

It's also going to be one of the best summers we've ever had, got to buy a Cab, for a good thrash round the lanes with the hood down.
