Maserati GrandTurismo S ZF Auto or MC Shift?
Discussion
Hi all,
I'm looking for some owner experience on the GrandTurismo S.....
Is there a noticable difference between the ZF Autobox (does this have shift paddels as well?) and the MC Manual Shift does this do a kind of Auto function as backup?).
Are both reliable units? Clutch longevity issues on MC Shift?
Also for a first-time buyer of Maserati what should I look out for?.. good places to purchase/service (dealer/indy) (Based near Egham Surrey).
What would be the main issues doing 10-15k miles per anum?
Regards... Cereal

I have the MC Shift and have no regrets about not getting the proper auto version. I had an auto QP GT-S while waiting for the Granturismo S and the auto box in that, whilst good, was slightly frustrating in its throttle response and wanting to automatically change down rather than keep to a gear and ride the torque. So when it came time to spec the Granturismo S the MC Shift was always going to win.
In terms of reliability, I have had no issues in nearly a year and use the car most days in London, which would probably show up any significant failings in the MC Shift package, but hasn't. Instead, it has proved to be remarkably easy to live with and whilst still not as easy as a true manual in town, when on the open road gunning it, there is no comparison. Plus, my understanding of the exhaust on the GT-S auto is that it is not the same as the one on the MC Shift car in that although it sounds similar it opens the valve at a specific RPM (i think from recollection it is about 3,500 or similar) whereas with Sport pressed in the MC Shift, the by pass valve is always open which would be my preference.
As for the mileage you intend doing I see no obvious issues with that, the cars are very well built and should have no problem with that kind of mileage. Hope this helps.

Cheers for the links... I think this resolves the MC shift issue and gives me more confidence in it's long term daily drive proposition.http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

As for the V12V.. I agree more £ but I'm possibly thinking it could be a bit of a cult car as not many are selling and the production run could be cut short... similar to the Exige S1.. and the net result is a highly sought after halo car.

Guess it depends if you need back seats or not Andy ;-)
Hope you're not selling the Morgan though....
Not sure.. possibly.....Hope you're not selling the Morgan though....
I spoke to the factory about the Morgan Eva yesterday but this may not be around in time and I'm not getting the use out of the Aero as much as I should. I drive the race car more, even to work and the shops which is quite amusing.
The BM Coupe is up for change soon, so thought about swapping in two cars and consolidating into one.
Hence something a bit wild....
As for back seats... I think we need to get another tow car so a cheap 4x4 may come into the mix.. it will also help control the mileage on the Masser or AM. So consideration for back seats... would be a benefit but could be prepared to conceed for "the right car"... We're not in a rush to have kids at the mo.
For GTS/DB9 money then no.. if the right V12V came up then.. we could be tempted... It's a car we both want to own at some point.. but the GTS has always been attractive, I nearly picked up the Blue special edition Masser GrandSport with the carbon seats when I got rid of my last Aero... but that would not have been my daily driver and the sales-chap quite sensibly said.. it's not going to be much faster or different from the BM Coupe so probably not much of a weekend special. (It would not have felt different enough).
Anyhow.. back to analysis.. all advice welcome.
BTW.. I hear you are making the same thoughts at the moment.. do you think we could get a deal on 2?
hehe like your thinking on a deal on 2!
Also been speaking to Malvern about the Eva - keen to see it before I leap anywhere with a deposit though.
Right now I'm having similar thoughts about a Granturismo, and have been toying with the idea of a 612 for a while as well (back seats are something that Liz is keen on right now but thats what being married for 3 years does I guess!).
So either we go that way and I swap in the Aero for a GTS / 612 / Continental, or hang on for an Eva. Right now I'm thinking that I'll hang of for the Eva, chop in the BMW so Liz gets something some smaller and more fun to drive (considering a 993 porker) and I'll looking out for a 'shed' to drive down the station / do the runs to Homebase etc.
I do love the Granturismo though and would love to get back into a Maserati again sometime - I know I've moaned about my 3200 costing me a fortune on here, but I still loved it and occasionally miss it. Keep thinking about a QP for Liz, but she wants something smaller than the 7 as it's annoying her in traffic and driving around central london so a QP isn't really going to fix that!
Got followed by a lovely 4200 coming out of central london heading back to Pinner last night - sounded great
Will PM you about setting up a meet with the rest of the Aero crowd - not least so we can catch up and all get a look at Aeromans SuperSport..

Clutches on the f1 gearbox are supposed to last around 10-12000 miles but I'm mot so sure. Had my GTS for a year and the drive train started to tramp when changing into second when pulling away. It had done about 6000 miles. Really loved the car though and the noise is always something to look forward to! The back seats are quite comfortable ( I'm not 6 ft) and I find them better than a continental GT's rear seats.
Had a peak in the back of a 612 and it looked like it was tighter in the back than the maser but I didn't actually get to sit in it so not 100% on that

Anyone else... reflections of living with a GTS long term?
