Firstly, does it have one? If so, when does it need changing?

Most manufacturers say it should be around 60k so I suspect a renault to be about that.

If you're car has done over 60k without a cam belt change your tempting fate to be honest. Personally I'd get mine changed at about 50k for peace of mind

Yeh I'd start to think about changing it pretty soon then. Like I said, just for peace of mind

My Clio has just had its cambelt changed at 72k, I think that is Renault's advice in the service book from what I remember.

8 years is a very long life for a cambelt. When we had a 2003 clio I was recomended 50k or 3 years before luck starts to stretch.

Just looked up online, it's either every 72k miles or 6 years, whichever comes first, so in this case it's definitely due one.

and now I'm guilty of something I hate other people doing! Guess I should have looked it up, but thanks anyway, all.

You're not the only one. I paid over £200 for a cambelt service on the 3 years/50k advice I posted above. only to find out a few years later/ an hour or so ago it was bks biggrin

oh dear...next question. Do I really need to send it to a Renault main dealer to do the job or can any local garage do it?

At that age and value I don't think it worthwhile paying main dealer labour rates.
If the cambelt is like th 1,4 16v I had then it requires allot of labour and some degree of experience with that engine. I was quoted around 5-600 euros most of labour as it was much more time consuming.
Maybe check around for Renault specialists but a get a quote from a main dealer or two to compare?

My cambelt change (inc water pump) and oil change cost me £322 at an independent garage, if that's any help in getting quotes for yours.
