Any recommendations on places to see en route to the 'Ring?
Discussion
I have around 5 days of travelling early September to get to the 'Ring and back.
I intend to go via Paris and back via Belgium.
Does anyone have recommendations on places to visit en route or whilst at the 'Ring?
Ideally, not too much of a detour
Edit: Also, what the the 'cheap hotel' equivalents to the Travelodge/Premier Inns in France/Germany?

Bin Paris.
Do Reims. Eindhoven is pretty cool as well. Bit wiggly, but eminently doable.

Unless you have a dent wish don't take your car to Paris. It's a s

Eindhoven is a great call IMO - if you are into a bit of culture I highly recommend the Van Abbemuseum

You're better off just getting to the Ring and using somewhere like Koblenz as a base. (The Ibis has fantastic PH-friendly parking) Koblenz itself is stunning, just what you would expect of a smallish German town. Excellent gun shop too if you're into that stuff
Koln/Cologne is a short drive away if you fancy a city break, the Dom/Cathedral is utter gothic coolness.
There's a castle nearby (30mins max) called Burg Eltz - google it, it's like something from a book of fairy tales - fantastic, and great curry-sausage served there too. There is also a great war memorial at the old Prussian fortress just outside Koblenz - eerie but sublime at the same time.
All of that is about 30 mins from the Ring in a few directions, all serviced by decent (read - seriously impressive) A roads.
Have a good time!

.... SOME parts are, i.e. a bit of the old town the RAF didn't raize to the ground in that famous night of bombing in WW2 ... where it's now like Basingstoke, i.e. cement and 'kin ugly!I can't remember the name of the bar/restaurant, but there's a great place nr the centre that's run by an ex-British Army chef. He and his wife serve some excellent food.

Luxembourg's not far from the 'Ring, hence why the F1 GP was sometimes the Luxembourg GP. City centre is 1,000 years old and wasn't bombed to smithereends by the RAF or the LW in WW2!

This, and if you do do Luxmbourg, nip into the Westerwall Tank Museum at the same time
