I've just booked my car in for a major service at a local Porsche Specialist & I asked him what oil they use & he said Castrol GTX Magnatec.

I asked why they didn't use the recommended Mobil 1 & he stated they thought it was just too thin & have found that nearly new cars had developed oil leaks due to thin oil.

They have had no problems with Magnatec.

Anyone else use Magnatec & should I be happy to let them use it?

There is nothing wrong with 15w50 Mobil 1 Motorsport, but I bet they don't use that as it would cost them too much ;-) The 0w40 can be too thin tho', but that is the mass market stuff.

AFAIK, Magnatec is a mineral not even a semi-synth. Some people like it, some wouldn;t use it in a lawnmower. Open verdict from me.

I agree with Dom Sounds like BS and probably more to do with the discount that they get from castrol

Magnatec is semi-synthetic. I used to use 15-40 in my E30 M3's.

If Porsche say Mobil 1 0-40 is too thin, then they should put in a thicker FULLY SYNTHETIC oil, like Mobil 1 15-50 Motorsport (assuming it isn't too thick!! )

What does 9M think?

Magnatec is a semi-synthetic. I believe Porsche recommend the Mobil 1 0w-40w stuff, don't they?
The guy at the Specialist thought that Mobil 1 was over-priced & no better than the Castrol.
Does anyone know if their is a published list of recommended oils for Porsche?

I stand corrected. Semi-synth oil is OK.

15w50 Motorsport Mobil 1 or 10w60 Castrol RS are the best around IMO.
