Dammit! Why I am I so dense?

I'd put about 40l of petrol in before I woke from my trance and realised what I was doing yikes. There was probably about 5l of diesel in the tank beforehand.

Rather than wait 1-2hrs for someone to arrive to empty the tank, I parked it away from the pumps... which required running the engine.... but only for 5 seconds.

So what do you reckon, anything damaged or everything OK?

Also, the first couple of places I rang wanted £150-£200 to drain it, seems a bit steep to me, I wonder of a local garage would be up to it, or do the specialised practices give the whole system a good cleanout?

Probably fked, petrol will knacker the seals on the diesel pump and other stuff. You should have pushed it out of the way without operating the central locking as this often initiates a purge from the fuel pump. but hey you ran it so its now got petrol in the injectors, fuel filters, pumps, you'll probably need an oil change too as there will be petrol in the oil from cylinder wash down etc.

Although it would give you the chance to get shot of it and drive a V8 instead, they like petrol!

A fking bluemotion polo for fks sake. :shakeshead:

as an estimate for the works now involved, circa £200 including refilling with diesel, unless the pump, seals etc are knackerd then you could be talking into thousands.

Very after-the-fact but why didn't you just push it?

As for running the engine:
Diesel fuel pumps use the fuel as lubricant, because diesel is oily. Petrol is...not. you'll most likely be fine but the engine you're talking about has a low and a high pressure fuel pump. I'd hope the high pressure one hasn't had any petrol in it.

Why do you think £200 is steep?

Your car will certainly need a new fuel filter, will need the entire system flushed. You might need new injectors, if you've damaged them. Do you think it will take a mechanic no time at all?

What do you think would be a reasonable price?

Do not tell VW recovery what you have done... get a local garage to drain it out

Do not tell VW!

You know, with respect, you're being very condescending, and whilst it wouldn't be my choice, I was following a very well driven example of one of these the other day and was quite surprised at the pace it had. Didn't hold me up at all.

Agreed with the starting it was an error.

AA had specialist vans for this situation now. But having run it who knows.

Good luck with it all chap, but the £200 quoted seems very cheap to me and I would have been expecting a bill into four figures.

Sorry to sound like a stuck record, but you must have known that starting it was a bad idea surely? Asking the chaps in the shop to help you push it away from the pumps would have been a far better idea.

uh oh, not looking good so far.

Why didn't I push it? It was a sloping forecourt and would have needed a few helpers.

I knew at the time that starting it was a bad idea, I must have been a bit panicked or sommat.
Of course in in hindsight, I'd be much happier now if I did just ask for help!

The car will be fine. Get it recovered home via the AA and find someway of pumping the tank, and as suggested don't tell VW or they will try to invalidate your warranty.

I thought £200 is steep to stick a hose in the tank and syphon it out. If I had enough jerry cans I wouldn't mind doing it myself.

Now with a bit of googling I realise that tanks have anti-syphon systems and it's not that simple. Ho hum.

If you've only driven it for a few meters I reckon you'll be ok.

A mate did the same with his 59' Passat earlier in the year, exept he drove it home which was a few miles.

He then rang VW who said they'd have to do about £2000 worth of work on it.

He then rang the AA who came and picked it up, took it to a local garage where they drained it, flushed the system and put a new filter on it.

He's probably done 20k miles in it since with no problems and cost around £400 to sort.

I would get the specialist ones to do it. £150-200 seems pretty fair to me.
