Is it just me or does there seem to be an awful lot of blokes driving around in those horrid French CC cars - not really the 206CC but the bigger Pug and Renault models (although I have seen a couple in StreetKas - camper than a row of pink tents).

Each to their own and all that but they really are such girlie cars that I can't help feeling they look faintly ridiculous - I don't think I could be seen driving one on my own or with a (male) friend in with me.

Or am I wrong and they don't have the totally girly image of the 206 and it's ok to drive a Megane convertible for example?

(Obviously I am "wrong" as people can drive what they like - but you know what I mean wink)

Ive been driving a cabrio for a year and have only had one bad experience, the rest overwhelmingly positive.

Some stupid threw a full, open box of corn flakes at me. Missed aswell, only got 8 flakes in the car hehe

Couldn't care less about the girls car thing though, I don't think most non-car people do either.

I've had loads of two seater convertibles and years of hairdresser jibes.

Never bothers me in those but a mate picked me up in his OH's Megane cab the other day and I felt like a right tart.

Not as bad though as when another mate nipped to the petrol station with me in his car (A Wrangler Jeep with the roof off) to buy what I assumed was a packet of cigarettes. Turned out he was actually meeting his new girlfriend (honestly!) later and was buying condoms. I haven't been back there since.

Unfortunately we have 2 tigra's (newer CC type) in the family and at times I'm often driving one of them - Much to my displeasure.

All those threads about people driving cabriolets with the roof up in 30 degree's +, well, I am guilty. Driving one as a bloke is one thing but driving one with the roof down and sunglasses on is another.

I just hope that people understand they are owned by women and on this rare unfortunate occasion a man is left with no other option than to drive it.

In the worst case when I have a male passenger journeys are made fast, direct and over in as short a time as possible.

I don't mind driving the gf's mini cabrio with the top down. I must look like a total tit, but who cares, if you're in a convertible it's rude not to make use of it on a nice day.

Not too sure that a Mini really falls into the same bracket as the others, but I know what you mean.

There's a certain something that makes the CC car overly girly - for example ALL the Pugs are (to me at any rate), StreetKa (screaming bender!) as well as the Megane, the Nissan Microbe, Mitsubishi thing, Tigra. But curiously not the VW Eos(?) thing or the Focus CC. Not any BMs. I am not sure exactly what I am basing my opinion on though confused

My parents have been on a cruise the last couple of weeks and took my Twingo GT so they could take the suitcases. I have been using their car which is a daihatsu copen. I felt a bit silly driving it. A few chavs pointed and laughed at me. But on very hot days sitting in the red leather bucket seats with the roof down its still feels good.

Haha, good man. Takes a real man to drive one of these and not give a damn. People care far too much about what others think, it must be a British thing.

I quite like Street Kas and would drive one regardless of what people think.

Anyone that chooses or dismisses a car purely because it looks a little bit too girly or gay is a bit of a moron and needs to seriously look at their self esteem.

Is it me or do most of these men in CC's seem to be 50ish with immaculate hair and are usually wearing pastel coloured shirts?

Not that I'm generalising or anything, but it does seem to be the way. biggrin

ETA: I myself get the odd smirk off people travelling in the other direction when I've got the roof down and my shades on on a nice day but I really don't care. Like The Wookie says, it'd be rude not to.

Why is a convertible, as in a car that is compromised, less practical, possible leaks, is more noisy, heavier and more of a handful in the bends girly??

There's an old guy that drive around near my work in a barbie pink Micra CC, he sometimes has a woman sitting next to it but she is never driving it, I always wonder what happened when they went into the car showroom:

Man: We need a car for pottering about town.
Woman: Can we have this one, it's a nice colour and the roof folds away.
Man: But it's pink! And I'll lose my wig driving with the roof down.
Woman: I like it though, it's a nice shade of pink.
Man: You don't even have a licence, I'll look like an idiot.
Woman: I'll hide the viagra....
Man: Where do I sign.

Good question, but they would not be aware of any of this until it was too late surely!

I think the issue with these folding-solid-roof 'CC' cars is that they are neither sporty (no-one seems to do one based on a GTI or a VXR, for example, mainly because the scuttle-shake would tear the car in two) nor are they particularly practical, as the roof inevitably takes up all the space in the boot.

Which means they are bought primarily by people who want to just pose and be seen in the thing as they cruise around at quite low speeds showcasing their collection of designer sunglasses. I think more women than men fit into this category.

For some reason a car with a canvas roof (with the possible exception of the Audi A3 and MINI cabrios) has more kudos, simply because it means, by and large, that you don't skimp on boot space, you don't have this overly weighty and complicated roof mechanism, and there's a distinct possibility it leaks in the winter. Therefore you might have to suffer to own it, and this marks you out, in a small way, as a 'proper' enthusiast.
