My outgoing mini, and incoming MX-5......
Discussion
93 Mayfair, sadly going up for sale soon, 9 years of mostly smiles. I may cry when it burbles off up the road.......
And now my 'car I want to own, that should be reliable but fun, before I get married next year'. It's not mint, but its in decent shape, just needs a service. I'm beside myself because my Mini insurance doesn't run out til the 17th, when the MX-5's starts. It's sitting on my drive doing nothing. grrr.

That is such a shame to sell, I understand the practical need, but 9 years with the mini... Have you heard about people who sell cars early on then track them down later in life to buy them back and restore them? JK from Jamiroquai did with a BMW 1602 or something. Is there anywhere you can store it?
Yep I do have a double garage, which has an office built into in, meaning the only car I can fit in there is a Mini, side on. Got the MOT tomorrow, and if it fails miserably, I may convince my better half to keep it. Always fancied dropping in a 1380, which I always promised myself 'when we come into some money'.
Don't get me wrong, getting married is a wonderful thing - best day of my life so far.
But...you're going to sell a car you've owned for nine years to put the money towards a one day event. About a week after your honeymoon ends, when you have nothing specific to save for anymore you will look at that space in your garage and wish you'd just put the 2k on a card and kept the car.
Consider it as an investment; money in the bank, a mobile rainy day fund...or your kids first car in twenty years!

Fantastic choice on both counts. When I got my mx5 luckily I had two minis so only had to get rid of one. I couldn't get rid of my 1275 as it was my first car and I've sunk an awful lot of money into it.
The mx5 is a great car to move to though. It has extremely predictable rwd handling in the same way as the mini with it's fwd. Even with an average driver behind the wheel they can be very quick.

This may seem harsh - Its a mini FFS. I certainly wouldn't want my kid to be driving one as a first car in 20 years.But...you're going to sell a car you've owned for nine years to put the money towards a one day event. I also prefer the MX5. Good choice!

It may only be a mini, but they are fewer and fewer. My point is simple that if the OP fully intends to get another in the near future (as he says in his post) then he would be better off keeping the one he has now.
