Just looking at a house in Petts wood, and having never been there, I like the loaction and the surroundings. Decent looking on streetview, and though I would prefer Sevenoaks, it is just too far from london.

Went to check crime stats and got a shocking result. I assume it's because upmystreet is showing me stats for bromley and not petts wood itself.

If i ever moved to Petts wood, I would have no reason ever to set foot into bromley, so just wanted to hear some general info and opinions about if from other PHers here and maybe get a link to the statistics pertaining specifically to Pett's Wood.

Thanks

I live in Bickley, half way between PW and Bromley, to be honest I'm not a fan of PW at all. You're very close to St Mary's and St Paul's Cray, and Orpington is just down the road. In my opinion these are far worse than Bromley, for everything from transport links to shopping/eating/drinking etc.

The crime stats are probably by Borough, so that's probably the case. I live around that way myself and would rate Petts Wood poor/ average.

Try Beckenham, Shortlands, Bickley or Chislehurst.

ETA I agree that Bromley isn't bad at all.

Is that little parade of shops still there, near the train station if I remember correctly?

I did a bit of work there, and the funniest thing happened. I would park my car up, and go to lock it with the blipper and it would never work in that area. Move it down the road, and the blipper worked fine. That's my only experience of Bickley.

As you were.

No idea about crime stats but Bromley is a mixture - Bromley South being a lot nicer than Bromley North.

Petts Woods has some nice houses - including some vastly overpriced semi-detacheds. But then so do most of the areas not far from there.

Trains from PW take longer to get into London than trains from Orpington/Chelsfield. In fact Sevenoaks may be further out then PW but you can probably get into London on the train just as quickly.

Yes it's still there, no idea how they survive especially the miserable gits in the travel agents smile

I think the Borough of Bromley includes Lewisham and Catford which are pretty skanky, but really there are very nice areas to live in around here with some good access to London and other travel hubs.

I'm in Bickley too - anybody fancy a pint? beer

Petts Wood is ok in general, it is a little closer to the crays and orpington though, but cheaper. not a bad place to live imho.

No, Lewisham is in the Borough of Lewisham.

Not Lewisham or Catford, but does include places like Penge, Crystal Palace, Swanley, Mottingham and parts of Downham/ Grove Park which are mostly scum stholes and will be the source of a lot of the crime stats.

I'm Bickley too ....... small world.
Personally think Bickley/Chislehurst is nicest, then Petts Wood (East nicer West side - East being nearest Chislehurst), then Bromley. Have seen downturn in the Town Centre certainly to the extent that don't go out there in evening.

Have some good Restaurant recommendations if you need any ......

As said by the others, Petts Wood isn't quite as swanky as some parts of Bromley but still very nice all the same and certainly not dodgy at all. Trains into London aren't as good as Bromley South / Orpington, or Elmstead Woods / Chislehurst though. Not heard of any bad stories - it's just dull but pleasant suburbia.

Funnily enough, Chislehurst - which is rather posh in places - is the car crime capital of the UK! Must be all the number of nice motors attracting unpleasant types:

Oh, I'm from Bickley as well - definitely seen NiceCupOfTea's Saab around a few times. Would be good to have a pint & natter about cars on a sunny evening, if any of the locals fancy it. Anyone remember the Ferrari dealer in Bickley, around 2000-2003? The new BMW showroom just isn't the same...

My parents have lived in Petts Wood for 35 years. I'd be amazed if the crime figs are high - surely some mistake. Since this is PH I'm not surprised to hear the "it's OK - nothing special" comments. But I think the vast majority of folk in the UK would think Petts Wood very nice.

By the way, do you mean Petts Wood East (Station Square) side, or Petts Wood West (Queensway side)?

I lived most my childhood in St Paul's Cray, bought my first house off Chelsfield Lane in Orpington and now live in Swanley Village (which is not Swanley! hehe) so I know the area pretty well.

And like most places, it depends where exactly you are as very nice areas do border some terrible ones (and that's excluding the usual Pistonhead snobbery wink)

As others have said, if you're looking at terraced houses on what used to be known as the Coppice Estate, steer well clear. But as you're comparing it to Sevenoaks, I assume you're not!

So, like most places, you won't be too far from a chavvy scumhole, but you don't necessarily have to mix in such areas.

I'd also agree that Bromley itself isn't too bad at all these days - used to see a lot of trouble Fri/Sat nights but now it's quite quiet (having seen the troublesome pubs close due to lack of business in the last few years).

I would agree with that. Im Crofton, sandwiched between Petts Wood and Orpington. Its a quiet suburbian area, not much crime. Orpington station has a great service into London (london bridge, cannon Street, Waterloo and Charring Cross) and as it stops at Petts Wood likewise. Later trains outside of the rush hour are fast to Orpington from London Bridge (15mins).

The houses from the War Memorial end of Orpington High Street up the hill are nice, the other end of the high street not so nice, Cray etc. Likewise one side of Petts Wood is a bit posher than the other (Queensway side).

Bromley is ok for a drink during the week but I never go in or a Friday or Saturday night, more because its too busy. I have not heard of any problems lately.

Hi Nicecupoftea byebye we should have a beer evening, there are enough of us around this area

If you are commuting by train into London, it takes the same time from both.

You also avoid the chavs on the Sevenoaks service.

I used to live in Hollingworth Road, PW West from 95 to 01, then grew up and moved out and into London.
It was ok, much better than where i used to live before (Downham), but there was always trouble on the Coppice estate at the bottom of Hollingworth Road, and you would hear the typical chav-scum car racing up the road every now and again.
But as mentioned above and when i was living there, PW was very family/OAP orientated, night life would be spent in the Beckenham/Bromley area (there were only two pubs in PW at the time, don't know if that has changed, not been back in years), but would cost a fortune to get back home.

I was looking at semis within abou half a mile of the station, there were two i liked (going by the estate agent's pics) east side of the railway and two, west. smile Still not clear wich one is meant to be posher. I liked that most houses had gardens that rather than ending in another house, they usually border on fields or wooded areas.
