I have to be in Portsmouth on Thursday night staying at the Marriott. Any recommendations for a decent restaurant or great pubs on that side of town? i.e. not a zillion miles in a taxi?

Gunwharf Quay - there are some nice restos there

(although I'd always avoid Pompey if I could!)

Ooh, the concrete Marriott tastefully positioned on the M275/M27 junction!

Basically you're screwed with two possible options:

1) The next door KFC drive-thru followed by a dash to the Krispy Kreme franchise at the Tesco if you can stomach such ste

or,

2) A cab to gunwharf quays for a wide variety of slightly over-priced generic theme restaurants overlooking the harbour to glamourous Gosport.

Bon Appetite! biggrin

Agree on Gunwharf, there are some nice pubs and restaurants there.
The Customs House pub is quite nice.
Do you have to stay in that local area or are you able to look further afield?
Pompey isn't exactly the nicest place in the world... wink

In all fairness i have lived in pompey for 2 years. what type of food do you like. it will involve getting a cab or driving onto the island though. like others have said Port solent is ok but a little dead....

Ah Pompey...
Whilst it is a bit of a rough town in places there are some very good little eateries there as well.

Just off Palmerston Road there is a place Called Rosies Wine Bar, it might have some live music as well Think the road is Elm Grove or Kings Road not 100% sure. the food used to be great, not too expensive and a good wine list.

If you want a steak try Shorties a short walk from Clarance Pier. There is also another nice bistro next to Shorties.

Enjoy the Marriott... its in a terrible location!

Thanks for the tips! smile

I keep my boat at Portsmouth, but am unfamiliar with the town as I tend to pass through and leave rather rapidly.

Does anyone know the Bombay Bay? Seems to have reasonable reviews.

Yes, really looking forward to the Marriott. It looks like a type of luxury I've never known before.

As has already been said, Port Solent is really close to there and that is a good spot for food, as is Gunwharf Keys but that requires a ride into town. Also check out the Pizza House in Hilsea for a really good italian owned by a complete madman who's kid was my best mate at junior school who I have since lost contact with. For pub food I recall The Mermaid at Port Solent being pretty good but it has been a while since I last went there.

If you want something off the beaten track there is also a nice surf and turf place on Alfred Street near the King's Theatre in Southsea that might be worth looking at. That area is a bit more bohemian compared to chav central although the Wedgewood Rooms is also around there so you do get chavs at the wrong time of night. If junkfood is your thing the best burgers in town are located in the rest area on Portsdown Hill opposite The Churchillian pub. This place also has some really good views at night and lots of bikers and car modifiers go up there. In Cosham there is a really good sit down Chinese restaurant called The Golden Boat which I also recommend, and will also deliver to you. If you want another long trek the best Indian I know about in the area is The Indian Cottage in Horndean near the Red Lion pub, although, I gather there is a very good Indian at Port Solent.

The Marriot is not in Portsmouth itself, it is in North Harbour which is on the mainland (Portsmouth and Southsea is/was an island although it has been joined on to the mainland by land reclaimation and swamp draining). You will know when you cross the boarder onto the island because the average IQ of people around you will drop by about 10 points. North Harbour itself has a large 24hr tesco, a Pizza hut and a KFC as well as a harvester style pub if you have cravings for it and need provisions at the tesco. The Marriot is ok, I sang there once or twice with my choral society when I was still doing that.

Possibly the best Indian Restaurant in Portsmouth. Overlooks Eastney Marina and serves seafood, Goan, Southern Indian and other dishes that aren't the standard Indian nosh. You can eat on the large balcony if the weather's good.

The owners also have a steak restaurant on the ground floor, South Fork.

It's in Elm Grove. Rosie's used to be great, it changed hands a couple of years ago when the original owners moved to the A Bar near old Portsmouth and food quality and service went downhill. Live music is jazz and is on Friday evening and Sunday lunchtime.

Off topic but I lived in Gosport for a couple of years. After a night out in Pompey the highlight had to be getting the boat back across the water!

I'll put in another vote for Shorties steak house. It's quite a small place, so an idea to book ahead if you want to turn up on a Friday or Saturday. Often overlooked and reasonably priced with decent enough food. Most of the pubs tend to have a generic menu.

It's a bit more of a drive in though, if you want somewhere close try Port Solent as mentioned, cinema there too.
