Think flappers are not adjustable, and resistors take care of mapping.
Only hotwire have a chip you can replace.

This is true... but there were some aftermarket mods made (eg by Sprintex) that added a piggyback circuit board into the ECU... sampled the engine revs and performed some jiggery-pokery to trick the ECU into squirting more fuel. Be interestd to know if Adam's car has an ECU modded like this...?Only hotwire have a chip you can replace.

You can change the chip on the hotwire, and what Steve Heath describes in the bible is the 'tornado'-chip that should give you a start. After that a rolling road and best with Mark Adams (think he provides the tornado chips), or talk to wedg1e and pick his brain for diy possibilities.

My old Flapper 450 had an adjustable ECU. It wes set up by J.E.Engineering for the engine on their dyno. From what I understand the dial adjusts the signal coming from the temp sender so the ecu thinks the engine is colder than it is, so you can set it a bit richer across the range if you have a bigger engine or make some breathing mods. It's not as specific as a Hotwire map it's more of a general increase or decrease across the range..........

There is no EPROM as such on the flapper (4CU) ECU... it was rudimentary technology back then. Arguably the bulk of the reason for switching the RV8 to injection was to satisfy emmissions regs in certain markets; the fact that many race cars use carbs instead proves that the system is too limiting once you get serious with the power.
The later hotwire (14CUX ECU) setup is better in that it can be remapped... but there are still those who argue that it can be done better by aftermarket means.
Personally I'm not that bothered; I accept the car the way it is. If I wanted to go very quickly I'd buy a chavtastic Impreza. Or another bike...

Ive recently purchased some spares that included 2 ECUs, one of which has the turnythigymeboby on the side!
Its got a little counter on it to tell you what its set at and a little tag indicating 'this is what it should be set at'
If i put it on the 350i, will I finally be able o get it to pop and bang???

Have you ever fiddled with yours if so what happens?
I don't have a knob, but I do have the original description on what the knob does.

I know it's easy for me to say, as I have a 280, but if it was me, I would seriously look at the DIY digital engine management system known as "MegaSquirt" (on the web).
These guys claim they can fit their solution to a wide range of engines, and as far as I know, provided you have -
a 'flapper' (vane) meter or a manifold pressure sensor (Ford or GM), [can fit one easily]
a throttle position sensor (perhaps the trickiest of the bunch to fit if you ain't got one)
a engine temp sensor (any old hole in the engine block...)
a air temp sensor (flappers have them already)
you can get one of these to manage your fuel AND ignition timing
(yeah, you will have to lock the dizzy).
Compared to the hassle with the old analogue box, I reckon it's worth a try.
No...I'm not just blowing smoke - I am involved in deciphering Ford EEC IV boxes, so I do know a thing or two about how this kind of system works....(In fact it's the 2.8 and 2.9 Colognes I'm looking at !).
